Can Horizons be purchased cheaper?

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting Elite Dangerous for my Xbox. But with Horizons on the way do I wait? Because I'm aware of you buy Horizons you get the Elite Dangerous game included.

My question is .... If you already own Elite Dangerous will Horizons be purchasable as a cheaper update? Or will you have to buy the full Horizons?

I'd rather not buy ED now just to have to effectively pay for it again when I buy Horizons.

Does anyone know the answer to this yet? Thanks in advance 😄

On PC, Horizons is a DLC addition to the main game - it cannot be played without owning Elite: Dangerous (Season 1). There is a "Deluxe" edition that includes Elite: Dangerous and Horizons on PC. Not sure how this is being handled on XB1.

While I get it can feel like a lot of money, people seem to forget that it is not just one update you buy, not just one dlc, but a full year of everything that happens, so even at full price it is rather cheap? or at least in my eyes.

Afraid the answer is No, unless they offer it during a sale. It is only a "Season Pass" so when season 3 comes out you would have to pay again. I do not think that with season 3 you would get Horizons, just the base game and season 3.
I hope that future seasons do not require the previous seasons, only the base game. This would give players a customizable gameplay experience. If you do need the previous seasons the Frontier are just out for the money.
As this is a "10 year Project" you would technically end up with multiple downloads of Elite Dangerous :p

Yeah, and some people get frustrated about this "paying again" issue, yet forget just how much time they've put into the game, compared to many 'full' games at same price, its an insanely good value, even paying for season passes.

That's the point of the sale, it's like 50% off at the moment and the likely £25 for the season pass will leave you only paying about £10 for the season pass. Really it's actually very cheap for what it is.

So if I purchase Elite Dangerous then there is no discounted price for Elite Dangerous Horizons.

I'm not going to get round to playing it for a while - so I don't think buying it whilst it's discounted is going to help me. I think I should probably wait until Horizons comes out - that way I get Elite Dangerous packaged with it.

Have I got that right?
Thanks to everyone who's replied.

ED is dirt cheap for the time you'll play it.

i paid £50 for assassin's creed some years ago which i have played for a total of 4 hours... there are also 25 or more other examples of these kind of games sitting on a shelf gathering dust

i happily "donated" £25 extra in ship skins to frontier because i only paid £20? iirc pre-release for some 500 hours + of Gameplay i think now :O (it's prob more but i'd rather not admit it)

while you may not play it right off the bat it will be better to get it discounted as downloadable games tend to be full price for ages, halo5 is still £40 on ms store where Amazon sell it for £20. Buy it sit on it

No idea on the Xbox.

Horizons is more likely going to be offered as a season pass much like it is on the PC rather than a standalone product. It is more likely that you'll be able to buy ED with EDH bundled in with it.

On the phrase 'pay again' it just relates to whatever Elite Dangerous 3.0 - 3.X offers. If you buy Horizons now it will keep being updated when Season 3 is out. It won't be taken off you.

I would not be hugely surprised if Horizons dropped in price when 3.0 comes out, or if there would be a 3.0 edition that included Horizons and another of Base Game + Horizons +3.0

I'm trying to work out whether buying ED whilst it's cheap on Xbox sale is worth it - if I'm not going to play it until after Horizons comes out. If I could buy ED cheap now - then just pay for Horizons separately in the future it would be worth it. But I think if I bought Horizons in the future it comes with ED anyway. That's my main question - does EDH come with the main ED game? Or will it be possible to buy just the Horizons add on "season" to join the cheap ED already purchased?

Thanks for any advice. I don't understand exactly what you would get if you purchased just Horizons. Do you need the vanilla game - or will it come with it?

If you look at the store:

https://www.frontierstore.net/games/elite-dangerous-cat.html

For PC you can buy Horizons standalone (£24.99), which requires the base game (£19.99)
Or 'Deluxe Edition' which is base game + horizons + some skins etc. (£39.99)

Yes, you need the base game to play Horizons.

I do not know the pricing structure or package structure for the XBOX.

Hi chap, someone read the Harry Harrison books when they were younger ( Still have a couple myself ) I would say get ED now while it's cheap, you're going to have to buy it anyway to run Horizons and the bundle might work out more expensive.

TBH, these questions are a waste of everyones time. Nobody knows the answer.

Pricing/editions haven't been announced for the Xbox version of Horizons and the PC version went through a couple of completely different methods of selling.

With the recent restructuring of ED on Xbox (Physics engine, ED, Arena etc), I would guess that horizons on Xbox will be a season pass that requires the full game (and will likely be sold in a bundle with it, as well as sold as a standalone pass for existing season 1 owners), but I/we don't know.

If you want to play the game, buy it in the sale, it isn't expensive. If you would rather gamble around how it will be sold when Horizons comes out some time in the next month or so, then go ahead and wait. (you may save a few quid/dollars/whatever, but I doubt it will be much of an additional saving).
