Can I increase the cargo capacity of the free Sidewinder?

To be honest, I don't see the need for the shields on the free Sidewinder at all if you're not planning on fighting. If it gets blown up, you get another, minus a reasonably tolerable loss of cargo, certainly nothing like the benefits of extra capacity. As long as you keep a decent percentage of your credits out of commodities at any one time (mine is 40%), you can get squeezed into the docking slot by an Anaconda which still can't fly straight and still be left with enough to get going again straight away. The scanner is just free money, I don't see getting rid nearly as beneficial as freeing up the slot taken by the shields.

DONT get rid of your shields. If you do someone can just ram you at a station, you will die and they will not be punished for it.

I am starting to come round to this idea. This is mostly because I expected the game to attack me MUCH MORE than it does, like the original Elite where you'd be attacked 2 to 3 times in just about every trip in to a station. I was expecting that. Really starting to feel trouble won't find you in this game if you don't go looking for it, which is rather diappointing. Also note, I am being forced to play Solo as I can't be bothered with the constant docking queues; I'm sure that isn't helping.

Putting back the Basic Scanner

Yes you can. The internal compartments (lower 3 for the Sidey) should account for your cargo bay, shield generator, and a Basic Discovery Scanner. You can easily replace the shield generator and BDS for more cargo space.

The number denotes the size of the module, the letter denotes the quality, or grade, with A being highest. Cargo bays are grade E.

Is it possible to buy sell/swap the extra 2 slot cargo back to the basic scanner? I fancied going off to explore and gather data, I've purchase the extra 2 slots and can't figure out how to go back to the basic scanner instead, hope someone can advise, thanks.

Sorted sorry, just realised I had all 6 slots filled with cargo so was unable to sell them and switch back to scanner, doh!
