Groups, Squadrons, and Factions

It should be noted that you cannot formally "join" any faction, in-game, either PMF or NPC.
What you can do is support specific factions, helping them gain influence and thus gain control over assets within star systems, and even invade other star systems.
You can choose to support a player faction, and you do not need their official approval of your actions before you do so. There's nothing the group can do to stop you.
However, if you wish to be effective, a co-ordinated effort from all the players backing that faction is optimal. There are no in-game methods of providing that co-ordination, so you'll need to use the group's website, discord or some other third-party connection.

You can see which platform each player squadron plays on in Inara, how many members there are etc, so that's a good place to find a good fit.
