Can I play with my friend?

I apologize if this has already been posted before, but it seems the information is kind of spread out. I wanted to get a few questions definitively answered.

I bought beta access awhile back, and while I'm enjoying the game, I want to invite some friends to play when it launches soon. But before they commit, I have a few questions about playing with friends.
Basically I want to be able to play with my friends but still play with the everybody else in the open universe. We want to get shot at and shoot other players. And how easy is it to meet up with friends? Will we start far apart from each other? Will we be able to inderdict and be interdicted together? What is easy to do together? Bounty Hunting? Mining? Trading? Exploring? Although I've been playing by myself, I really can't tell what the systems are for grouping with other players.

Basically how easy will it be to experience the game together with friends when the game launches?

Thanks in advance!

Well, the short answer is - not right now, but hopefully ... soon.

Everything you mention basically comes under the heading of "wings" (formerly "alliances") - a grouping system that was to sit on top of the "groups" instancing system, but which is not yet implemented.

You are not alone - this is a much requested missing game function. I wouldn't even call it a feature - its a basic structural requirement for an MMO.

What I'm really curious about is whether this will be implemented at launch?

Hm. So, we would have to luck up and get put in the same instance to even meet each other in the open universe then?

Technically you can still game with friends, just make sure to have them on your friends list (I know, obvious), and you should be playing in the same instance as them.

Yes you will also have to meet up, as every new game spawns you in a random solar system (your home system of sorts), just pick a solar system from the galaxy map and agree to meet up there.

As previously said, the 'Wings' feature is still missing, you can still fight with each other and trade cargo etc. But you will mostly be playing in selected zones such as nav points and combat zones, and even mining areas. As you can't technically super cruise and hyper jump together yet. That's still a do it by yourself thing.

Unfortunately even in a group, the instancing system is unreliable to downright malicious.

-Sometimes when you're in a group, you will be in the same instance but you won't be able to see or affect each other. You can gang up on ships in the area and they'll take damage from both of you but you still won't be able to see each other. This is super frustrating.
-Grouping up sometimes only awards the group leader with the bounty which very much discourages grouping.
-There is no predictability in terms of getting into the same instance.
-If there are multiple extraction zones, and you want to meet up with a buddy, good luck getting everyone to the right/same one. They are not labeled differently so it's basically guesswork.
-There is no way to drop into a USS together.

Basically it's a really frustrating experience right now trying to play with friends. I'd wait until launch before seeing if anything has improved in this department, but in it's current state it's not functional.

The rare times it does work though, it's quite fun and relatively stable though. Has potential.

I agree with Valcrow. At the moment its very difficult to end up in the same instance as friends, it involves logging on and off to try and end up in the same place. This is not good, it will basically destroy any hope of friends playing together and will result in bad press. Consider there is no true solo play anymore without internet connection, what we have at the moment is internet required but hit and miss if you can play with other players..... well now and again you see some but when you know you got couple of mates in the same system and hovering over the same landing pads, well this is not going to go down well.

Anyway it needs improvement. Hopefully it is improved before release so we can soak test it, it is important we test it else it could end up a disaster!

It is possible to play with friends and have a lot of fun. The biggest challenge is landing on the wake (the signal a ship leaves after exiting the super cruise). The mechanic of this is unnecessary complicated, but can be mastered. The wake landing will allow to join ANY activity including USS.
