Can I take a mission to kill without an FSD Interdictor?

If I take on a mission to "Take care of someone" do I have to have an interdiction module equipped or could I follow the target till they drop out of supercruise in system.

I see an AI player in super cruise as soon as i jumped into the system there was a mission to take them out at my last system BBS - I generally hesitate to take on combat roles until I'm better skilled and equipped but I scan this guy and he's mostly harmless and undergunned compared to me.

I follow him for a while but he never drops - I need to equip and can possibly come back for him?

Sometimes you can find them in Unidentified Signal Sources. Other times they will drop out of SC and you can follow their wake. Keep in mind that both of these options are much slower than just fitting an interdictor.

Got it - thank you both. I may have lost this guy... I went to a station to try fit an interdictor and now I don't know where to start looking - even though there was no interdictors for sale anyway.
