Can I tell If I Am Going To Overheat Before.....

No, but you can look at a weapon's Thermal Load - or the HPS (Heat Per Second) shown in Coriolis, and do a little head-math and figure out how long it's going to take you to overheat.

Pretty much you can count on continual fire of any weapon is going to lead you to overheating.

Thanks Wyrd,
Out of the blue my FDL overheats.
It reminds me of a time 4 years ago (give or take) when I bought an ASP. I traveled, what seemed like the whole bubble with no problem.
Then I put a bunch of stuff on it and couldn't jump to the next star.
I opened a ticket because this was just madness ! lol

My point being is I've notice when I want to complain about something, it's usually my ignorance that caused the issue.

I have a phasing sequence over charged PA and the rest double shot incendiary round frags.

I know these generate tons of heat, but I swore It never over heated no mater what I put in the Huge hard point (the PA).

I've stored all the engineered modules (had to buy a Cutter again for the 15th time and a Courier to free up module space...shame), sold the FDL and re-bought it.
I have reinstalled the modules and am about to take it for a ride.

I think its the PA, although I swear I've rode with this before ?

Pretty sure its my ignorance.

Incendiary generates more heat than standard.
PA's generate a great deal of heat, and over-charged even more so.

But heat isn't weapons alone - other modules, shield generators, power plants - all can generate and contribute to your overall heat.

And you may have used a setup like this, but if you've made any recent engineering changes, this can also be a factor.

Personally, I prefer Efficient mods for PA's, as they still give a boost to damage and dps, but cut the heat production immensely.

Anything that consumes large amounts of power will produce heat. Engines, shields, FSD's, SCB's, thermal weapons. Generally the systems that are continuously running don't produce much heat.

Items that are triggered and consume large bursts of power such as FSD charging and SCB's firing will mostly definitely cause heatspikes which can burn your ship.

The thermal kinetic weapons (PA's and Railguns) are the most heat intensive weapons of all. Firing one shot is enough to bring you to critical levels. Dual linking to fire two at once is most definitely enough to trigger overheat damage.

Thermal (energy) weapons are next biggest offender of heat building. Beam lasers which are the continuous fire weapons will drive up heat the longer their fired so it pays to take your finger off the trigger and fire these in bursts. Surprisingly Pulse lasers are the next biggest offender but that has to do with the fact that the player can control the firing rate and most players don't have the trigger discipline to fire in burst meaning they will fire continuously as long as the target is in their crosshairs. The buildup isn't as bad as beam lasers but if left unchecked, can drive up your heat. Burst lasers are actually the least buildup but that's because they fire in automated bursts and force the player to control their trigger giving the powerplant a chance to disperse the heat.

Kinetic weapons and explosives build up hardly any heat at all so you can fire them to your heart's content. Ammo however is a factor. (However taking certain kinds of explosive may force heat buildup.)

The higher you go in rating, the more the thermal load will build up.

Fortunately there is a slight counter in the form of your powerplant. Each power plant has a heat dispersal rating which increases with each letter rating. E being the worst and A being the best. So there's another benefit to increasing the rating of your powerplant besides the raw powerload.

So take a look at your build and fire groups. If you have a lot of thermal weapons on board and SCB's. Be careful how many you put in the same firing group or you'll cook your ship. Make sure you upgrade your powerplant for a slight counter to help disperse heat.

Oh and watch out for getting hit by those thermal, thermal-kinetics, and explosive weapons. You take fire from those your heat will spike as well. And that's before engineer effects.

Thanks Cmdr's,
I'm at a loss. I over heat just firing my Frags. I guess its time to swap modules 1 by 1 to find the culprit. Pain in the back side though. I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything ( experience has taught me to question this ). Mouse ate some wiring I guess ?

Perhap's some kind of over all heat indicator in Outfitting might help ?

Thanks again.

P.S. This happened to my Corvette a long time ago and it just became unflyable. Never did figure out what it was. I stored it for awhile. May have even sold it, I don't remember. I have no problems with today.....

Ok disabling all my shield boosters fixes my heat issues. Now I have to figure out which one or ones or.....
It's a start anyways.

Do you have an overcharged power plant? My Corvette used to overheat almost every fight. My power plant G5 overcharge added an extra 50% heat boost. Went back and re-engineered it to a G3 and the heat issues almost went away. I use 5 turret beams and 2 4A multis with 6 shield boosters.

I fixed it. Well sort of.

I had all HD Boosters on her.
I went to my storage shed in the back yard (my Cutter) and stripped the boosters off.
Put two Thermal boosters on and swapped out two HD Boosters.
These 4 had a lower power draw. It doesn't over heat anymore.

However now its back to the drawing board because I don't like my Shield / Booster configuration. I just did this to lower the Power Draw.

My resistances are ok. 43 / 35 / 52. But my health is only 2671.

I think I'm going to try Thermal Shields instead of Reinforced as suggested in other threads.

Suggestions and load outs welcome.

If you post your loadout and fire groups we can take a look and see where the heatspikes are coming from. Engineer effects too.
