can i trust my ship to my crew?

believe it or not but yesterday was the first time i got a crew member and a fighter bay. so far i just checked out how the fighter works. my crew member, a novice, remained in my ship of course. here's my question though. when i'm at a res or possibly even cz and i want to hop into my fighter, can i trust my ship to my crew member or will he get blown up by pirates? do i have to keep an eye on my ship and perhaps give orders to retreat from combat if things get too hairy? how's that going to work?

Rumour has it that when your crew has reached Elite status they are marginally competent when flying a ship.

I would much prefer them to be flying something disposable like an SLF than say a 7 million credit combat Keelback.

It is annoying enough when I lose my ship never mind < stopped to spare the profanity filter the bother>

Against other NPCs they do ok once they reach rank Master. At rank Elite you can trust them with your top combat ships. Only in CZs I'd keep an eye on them in case they get swarmed. As @Vandaahl said they are really good with railguns.

I let my Elite NPC crew member do Elite pirate lord assassinations on her own. After dropping to normal space I jump in the fighter and watch from a distance how she slaughters them in my Corvette (or Krait mk2).

Never ever let npcs fly your big expensive ships. They hold no regard for ammo consumption, seen them turn and attack police because they got grazed by one. They tend to faceplant into asteroids and I lost a corvette because my npc pilot was convinced she could play chicken with the surface of a planet. Whoever programmed them needs a polite smack to the back of the head. None of these pilots were "novice", at least "dangerous" ranked or above.

You can't even trust NPCs to not refuse all Orders you give them. Fly accordingly and accept what comes of it.

Letting NPC crew use the mothership is the fastest and easiest way to rank them. Unless the loadout is a lemon, NPCs of most any rank can do reasonably well against other NPCs and the risk is minimal if you are paying attention. At higher ranks NPC crew in a well Engineered CMDR vessel and trounce most groups of NPCs with negligible risk.

Put a rail gun in any slot you can find, let an Elite NPC fly it and be amazed :)

Mostly with how fast they can waste ammo!

The AI certainly has issues, but my CMDR's expensive ships are all quite immune to non-ATR police forces and planet surfaces.

This is often (though not always) a bug related to them having disabled weapons or thrusters.

You are absolutely right, let me correct my previous statement.

* ahem *

You can't even trust NPCs to not refuse all Orders you give them, or to not sabotage the Ship you entrust to them. Fly accordingly and accept what comes of it.

Are there specific ships or loadouts that work well for npc’s?

Has anyone built a ship specifically for the AI pilot so you can mostly pilot the fighter?

Biweave shields and more simplistic weapon loadout that can achive easy convergence work best. Setups that are overly consumable dependent or that need a lot of weapon group management are less than optimal.

If you're going to fit them with railguns specifically for NPC use, make sure they are plasma slug and that you have a decent supply of fuel.

Thinking out loud...

wouldn’t it be fun to have a pvp tournament where the main ships were controlled by npc pilots and the owners were required to be spectators only in their fighters? That way some innovative designs would make their way up the tournament ranks. Has this been done before?

You can always sit around at a CNB and watch NPCs fight.
