can i unpledge, if so any draw backs?

You can unpledge at any time in the galactic powers screen, the same you used to sign up.

I believe the ship discount applies to all CMDRs whether or not you are pledged to him, as I purchased my Anaconda at a discount in a Li-yong Rui controlled system, while not being pledged to anyone myself.

Being completely independent means you are interdicted less, and not considered hostile in any system. I'm way happier with no faction.

Note the difference between unpledging, meaning you go neutral and are not hunted by others, and defecting to another faction, which *will* get you hunted by NPC ships for betraying your original faction.

I believe there is a week long "cool down" time once you unpledge meaning you cannot join another for that time and are now "neutral."
And yes, everyone gets the LYR discount - pledged or not.
