Can life support (half) fail?

I was having fun in a combat zone when I got taken out by a hail of crossfire, not sure what it did, but I got a message along the lines of "Power limit exceeded", which as I don't have a set up that can exceed the power my power plant generates, I assumed meant that I'd taken some damage to a module, and that was the result. It left me dead for a few seconds, and by the time I got thrusters back and high-tailed it out of there, I was down to 35% hull and my canopy had been blown.

No problem, I thought, I'd managed to survive a similar incident an hour earlier when I was taken down to 2% hull and no canopy.

However, whereas with the first incident, my C3 (I think) life support had given me the proscribed ten minutes air supply, the second time, I was only given 5 minutes air, which annoyingly got me to 3km of an outpost!

So, is this designed behaviour, or is this a bug? I'd have understood if my life support had failed completely and gave me no time to get back, but to give me half of what it was rated to seems strange.

Life support has a set amount if "emergency air"
Each time it is used obviously the remaining air diminishes.
If you go to a station, not a platform that emergency air is replenished, at platforms it is not

If for any reason your life support unit lost power, the timer counts down while there is no power. When power is restored, the count-down stops but does not reset, therefore you have less time left should your canopy blow or you loose power again.

I learnt this the hard way while repairing systems 30k ly out... I thought it was a bug, but it was me not understanding the way the life support system works.

Hope this helps.

Could it also not be, if your life support module gets damaged and is not running at 100% then it looses it efficiency, hence less time...

Actually you can recharge your oxygen at Outposts, BUT you need to lower the platform and enter the station's hanger.

Not sure why they can't stick an air pipe onto your ship along with the fuel pipe, ammo loader, and cargo transferer. *shrugs*

Thanks for the replies! I'm not sure that it is the concept of having to replenish the air, as I got 5 minutes the second time around, and given that it took me longer than that to safely get to the outpost, I think it's safe to say that I wouldn't have had 5 minutes left from the 10 I started with the first time the canopy cracked. Also, given I had to pay for a lot of repairs once I reached the outpost, it doesn't seem too much to ask them to top the air up whilst they're replacing the entire canopy and most of the hull!

Is there any actual indication that your air supply needs topping up anywhere in the UI?

As for the power loss setting the clock to 5 minutes, that sounds most plausible, though it does strike me as rather a large flaw in a life support system, as being blown up and suffering power loss sounds like precisely the scenario I'd expect to be needing life support to kick in!
