Can of worms....

Probably about to open one with this thread, but seen as this game is going to be ED's main competitor i thought it might be interesting to discuss it.

The video above seems to be the most footage we have so far of actual gameplay.

If you don't want spoilers watch the video before you read below:

Hopefully we can have a thread about it that isn't which game is better than which but here are my thoughts:

  • Graphics are nice, not sure if id say better but nice
  • Love the fact you can walk around stations, get out of your ship in space and explore an eerie space station with a weapon to defend yourself
  • Combat seems more fast paced, didn't like what i saw as much, more explosions less skill, prefer ED for combat.
  • Controls seemed all over the place from what he was saying, almost like a bad console port, hopefully controls will be fully rebindable and FULL joystick support not just half-baked.
  • Life, the stations gave a sense of life which is very much missing from ED.
  • Ship UI, loved how each ship has a different UI, i think ED could certainly benefit from this in the future
  • Loved the little "BOGIE" ping when a ship came in, gave me an old 1980's stealth fighter feel :D
  • Flight handling which is a biggy, i actually think ED does it better (from what i can tell, hard to say without playing SC), especially if you master FA off i think ED has a better, more sophisticated flight system.

Overall it looks like SC is going to be a more arcady, shooter style space game with more combat less exploration, and more of an MMO feel, maybe even a younger target audience than ED i reckon. I think there can actually be room in the market for both these games rather than DIRECT competitors given they may be the space genre but have slightly different aims and approaches. I look forward to playing both, more choices are only a good thing for the consumer :).

My 2 creds.

Re-opening this thread.

The main Star Citizen thread is open now if you fancy popping on there, or you can talk about your specific topic here if you rather.

We're just testing a new moderation policy.

Thanks,

Zac

I'm no Star Citizen fan (actually find the shouting and bluster around it off-putting). However, the video the OP linked to is very impressive.

The walking around and seamless transition to flying a ship is very nice and gives an indication of what ED could do once the first-person walking mode is implemented. The EVA action would make some interesting ED missions, as is idea of exploring an abandoned wreck/ship/station. The audio mission descriptions seem very natural and certainly an improvement on reading a wall of text as it makes it seem more spontaneous.

The flight model itself doesn't look as good as ED, and I don't like the UI and limited view due to all the cockpit controls. However, having different UIs per ship is nice.

There are a load of questions about how the game will work. The ship that seemed to be "griefing" (that's a loaded word, I know, but you'll understand what I'm referring to), and the way the player "stole" another spaceship requires some controls to avoid the game being spoilt by a subset of anti-social players.

However, this is the first Star Citizen video that I've seen where the potential for the game has come together. This doesn't mean that it will deliver all that's promised, but it does look like a positive step forward in development.

That's more or less my feelings about that video, as well. I am a supporter of the game, although not in a massive way - I own two small ships that I bought ages ago. I've not lost any interest or faith in the game over time as I always expected it would probably come out 3-4 years later than originally forecast and require endless reworking of the various features. It's a mammoth undertaking, and Chris Roberts has a history of running overtime on development.

On the whole I think it's looking great so far. The alpha (I've only played 2.0 so far) has lots of promise, and I can forgive all the problems - it's an alpha. In many ways I prefer the direction they seem to have planned for the game than I do that of Elite Dangerous, but more needs to be seen yet. It will definitely have a very different "feel", and I imagine the final product being something like a combination of Freelancer and SWTOR.

The only big gripe I have, which is the same one I've had since the moment we had the ability to play with it, is the flight and combat system, which I hate with a passion. ED gets this so right, and SC gets it so wrong. Wrong enough to be a deal-breaker for me.
