can somebody help to an old seaman, please

Finally my company decided to install new sat. link and
they promise that every seaman on ship will have 3gb
of downloaded data per month. I want to play Elite but i dont know how many
data game is pushing for online gaming.I prefer Open, but i can live with SOLO too.
Can somebody check consumption (bandwidth) for me ,please

You can check yourself. Hit CTRL + B at the same time when playing Elite to see your bandwidth use in-game.

Understand your PC will use bandwidth in addition to the game and that will not be factored into what you are seeing. Solo will work best as usage goes up quite a bit with another player in your instance.

Should be enough with room to spare...Skyping the Mrs etc...

But using a sat link might be a prob...very bad latency usually. Sure as hell is better than staring at the Sodena for hours on end though...

And also very weather dependant.

Depending how long your gaming sessions are, whether you have any websites up and running or not 3GB/month I guarantee will NOT last you until the end of the month. Add skype every couple of days ( even more so with video ), you'll be running out of "balance" within a week to two.

Having a 40GB/month subscription myself ( yet likely a little more time on my hands ), staying below the .5GB/day mark is not without careful management. ( This includes youtube at low quality, a lot of browsing and the rare occasional video calls. )

What siphon's up the most are big updates, Skype, youtube, gaming, browsing.

Unless this bandwith is exclusively dedicated to E:D and very limited browsing. On the other hand, some is always better than none! But I can smell the disappointment when a 2GB patch comes out at the beginning of your monthly subscription leaving you with only days left.

Christ saliors get WiFi now...wow
I remember when the satellite telephones came out and we were super stoked.
I would not trade my experience for anything but it was alot like living in a floating minimum security prison.
It's awesome they have that now for you guys.

Now can you do me a favor and find me 30 yards of Flight Line?

Solo mode requires very little bandwidth, apart from DB's suggestion that he managed to get it to work on a train with a mobile I've seen it mentioned that at least one player uses a very remote connection somewhere in the Falklands.

Windows 7, and don't do the updates.

The 'promise' of 3GB will be the key, if they do manage it you should be OK.

As for me back in the day all we pirates ever got was hard tack and a parrot to send messages Ohhhh....AAAArrrr... Jim lad:)

Slopey (I think it was) used it on a plane @ 32,000 feet ! :)

I've been playing on Solo simply because I'm on 3G, but it's been fine for months and never had any connection issues.

I'd like to play Open but on 3G that's pushing it a bit. (and annoying for others watching you glitch your way across the universe)

hehe, you said seaman...

I regularly play ED:H at work using my mobile as a tether. It's hard to track exactly how much it uses, because my phone does updates and whatnot, but it's not anywhere near 3GB.
I average about 800mb to 1.5gb total usage from my 2GB limit. And I think ED only uses about 1/3 of that. Maybe even less.

For example, I've been tethering for aboit 5 hours today and according to my phone, I've used just 59mb. Just on tethering.
(That includes my windows 10 laptop trying to update itself!)

Edit: I should also add that I'm currently 20,200ly from Sol, so even if I play in open, it doesn't use any more data :D.
I'm not sure if NPCs cause data usage to increase.

However, it WILL use alot more if you're in open, with other players in your instance.

TLDR, ED uses almost nothing in solo mode.

On a semi unrelated note, if you play the Arma games online, they use shed loads of data. Sometimes 500mb an hour!!
Found that out pretty quick, stuck to playing Armas single player campaigns. Lol

Unless your 3G is slow, it's usually fine in open!
Try it :D

My connection at work can be iffy, so I tend to stick to solo or Mobius. Plus, I'm at work, so I have to stop if customers come :D

i was playing elite in solo mode for a month connected via my mobile phone, and used less than 1 MB data per hour. jumping, or getting into a new instance/scenario may take time sometimes, though.

I have a 50GB fair use restriction over any rolling 4 week period with my ISP. Occasionally I go over it, when that happens they cap my download bandwidth to (this is not a typo) 128kbps. As you can imagine, with the amount of multimedia content built into webpages these days compared to when that kind of speed was the standard, even for just browsing the internet it's effectively useless.

Fortunately I can distract myself by playing Elite Dangerous during those times because it has literally no discernible effect on the game's performance.

That's bandwidth anyway, as others have said latency may be more of a concern though.
