Can someone at FD please, please discuss why...

...there are Level 2 and Level 3 Detailed Scan categories listed under the Exploration heading in the Statistics section of the Status tab in the right-hand HUD panel? Are these types of scans implemented in-game yet, and if so, how does one go about doing them? I've read posts that people have tried using Detailed Surface Scanners and Advanced Discovery Scanners, the best kit credits can buy, and they've had no luck in doing one of these scans.

Please note, I'm not trying to be combative or anything. I understand if these listings are there in preparation for future game features or somesuch, and as such I'm perfectly fine with it being a secret (although I will NOT argue if you decide to tell us what that secret is!)

I just figured I'd ask the question, being as how, well.. I'm curious, hehe :)

Like a cat, as a matter of fact - That's why my friends call me 'Whiskers'...

Remains to be implemented. I'd speculate they've got something to do with the coming planetary landings etc. Or maybe more advanced detail scanners - we'll see eventually.

I forgot they had Planetary Landings planned. That's going to be so cool. Setting my Asp down and doing some science in a forest! Can't wait, CAN'T WAIT! lol

I try not to think about the coming planetary landings expansion stuff too much, in case it ends up being a bit of a letdown (as I feel exploration kind of ended up being).

But, yeah, I have to admit, I am ridiculously giddy over the prospect of landing on planets :D I already do WAY too many maths to figure out exactly how Earth-like all those 'Earth-like' planets are out there. How much more of my life and grip on reality will I lose when I can actually LAND on said planets??? I really, really hope it'll be as mind-blowingly awesome as we all hope and pray it will be :)

In terms of "time invested vs. reward" exploration currently is probably the worst paid action in the game, which is a huge letdown for me. I'd really like to see more credits for the hours you put in.

That said, I hope the landing/prospecting will not become another huge timesink with no proper gains. Other than that I can't wait either...it was one of my most beloved pastimes in FFE.

There's no 'probably' about it. Even someone in a Hauler on a non-rare trade run can outpace an explorer that isn't getting lucky streaks of earth-like worlds every couple of systems. I spent about 12 game hours in the boondocks flying to the Pleiades and back scanning every metal-rich and ringed planet along the way and returned with just over 700,000 cr in carto data.

It all depends on where you go and what you want to get out of exploration. By its very nature it's not a living (if you want to make proper money, then buy low and sell high in the biggest ship you can afford to fly) but exploration is an adventure to see things and go places, including things and places that nobody else has seen before, and take in wonderful alien sights and strange objects.

That said, Earth-like and metal-rich worlds will get you tens of thousands of credits if they are numerous in a system, black holes even more. This guide which I saw a while ago, not made by myself but absolutely excellent, may help:

Back in Gamma, I went to Sagittarius A* at the centre of the galaxy and got 139,715,053 credits for scanning its supermassive black hole, and as it happened, because of the Explorer ranking scale (which anticipates that exploration is a low-paying occupation ;)), that single action led to an instant ELITE. Of course, thanks to the recent server side update in release version 1.02 (that drasticaly reduced the payout of such objects so that people in the Race to Elite contest don't take advantage of such a shortcut to victory), that's never going to happen again... :p But that was strictly a one-off, and I digress.

If it happens sooner than that, I promise I don't bombard Earth with Toxic Waste canisters:D ...at least not much.

I'll be sure to be far away when that happens, make my home somewhere far away in deep space, in some canyon having a BBQ.

I think its best not to expect to much of it as it distracts from the main game.
cos if everyone sticks to his planet space is going to be very empty again.

I love the discussion that's sprung up in my humble little thread, but I'm sure we'd all love to hear from someone at FD to confirm or deny our suspicions about the Level 2 and 3 scans :)

... well? Anyone from FD want to weigh in? Pretty please? lol :p

Yeah but that equipment is expensive. Making your first 500k-1mio with Exploration only is tough. I sometimes earned only 15k per hour which is nothing when you need equipment worth 1,75 mio (surface + adv scanner).
