Horizons Can someone explain how the price of the new Expansion makes sense?

Hello, I am a beta owner (bought the game for 75$) but didn't play for a couple of months because the game felt "100 miles wide and 1 foot deep" i.e not much to do. I am thinking about getting the expansion but i don't understand why it costs 60$-25%=45$. This means I spent 75$+45$= 120$ on this game while the average joe who didn't own the game till yesterday can get it all for 60$!!! How does this make sense? Am I missing something?

Yeah, every thread just like this one on every other game with major expansions rather than reskin/rerelease forum. Oh and all the other threads about this for the last few months. Top right there is a neat little search bar.

The average joe who bought it yesterday didn't get to play it for a year :). All digital games seem to get cheaper ad they get older these days; people who are keen pay full price, latecomers pay less.

Any other game with expansion for example Starcraft 2 does not give all the content if you buy the latest expansion.
I don't mind if they charge a full game price for a "season" but why do you punish your early adopters and backers.

You seem to me like a fanboy sorry...

Can someone please respond in a way that makes sense? Or is there no sense to this?

Those are the breaks mate, you cannot tell me your not signed up to the weekly newsletter? Anyone that spent £50 or more for the Alpha/beta must have more than a passing interest in the game, so you cannot really complain if you paid out for the beta then let it be for months on end...have you been living in a cave with no internet? :D

I didn't read the newsletters. I don't mind the full price for the expansion. What i do care about is that the new customer gets all content for 60$ while the old backer gets screwed.

For example Starcraft 2 each expansion is separate u cant buy all the previous content by buying the newest expo if you want old content pay for it...

This is very bad customer retention....

Starcraft 2 ain't an MMO. If you're gonna make inane comparisons, at least do it within the same genre.

So let us take World of Warcraft (*sigh*) instead since that's more comparable with Elite: Dangerous (even though it really isn't). Have you tried playing it without having all the expansions? No? Well, it's because you can't. There's no point. Yeah, they're expensive upon release and becomes cheaper with time, like everything else. It's nothing new and certainly not something introduced by Frontier.

I'll try to explain it.

You don't need to pay 45$ for Horizons, you can just wait ~ 9 months and get it on a discount. You can continue playing the version you already bought but you will not be able to land on planets (since you didn't pay for it). Buying Horizons will not only give you access to the current version but you will receive free major updates until Season 3 launches as well. Note that the base game will get updates as well (for free, since you already paid for it) but as said above you will need to pay the developers if you want something on top because they don't/can't work for free. We are living in a system called capitalism where you need to pay people for doing work for you.

Exactly, Vanilla through MoP =$5, we all got ripped off spending $300 and $15/month to play WoW all those years, some kid can spend $65 today and play a whole month, all the expacs for free.

It's not really an expansion, it's a new "season".
It's sorta like you bought FIFA '15 (ED) and they just released FIFA '16 (Horizons).
Not gonna comment a whole lot about what i think of that, but that's their business model.
Fun fact i just found on steam:
ED 37.49 €
Horizons 53.99 €

So apparently, just the Horizons update itself doesn't weigh in at more than 16.50 €......which actually would be a decent price tag if it were a standalone expansion, go figure.

WoW's expansions come with 100000 times more content than one season of ED.
I would get this expo for this price if the first season would have convinced me to do so, however ED at the moment is like a house with (almost) no furniture... Sorry you can't argue with that.
Other games that cost this much have a much richer world and the Expansions cost much less, and this isn't really an MMO, saying it is, is simply living in denial...

Then don't buy it.

Pretty simple philosophy.

No need to argue, because there is nothing to argue about. If you are not interested in Horizons because you think the season will lack content nobody is forcing you to buy it. You can either ignore the game because you aren't happy with it or buy it later for a price that you find suitable.

I'm pretty sure I won't be the only one not to do so.
It's funny how easily you dismiss a potential player, but it kind of makes sense, in the current state of ED players have 0 meaning (you barely ever get to interact with them, or even see them) this seems to me like mainly a player vs AI game.
It is nothing like an MMO where no players = no fun gameplay, this game can work 100% without any community...

Thanks for the comments, makes sense. Shame I had high hopes for this game...

I'm an old backer. I don't get why people think older backers are getting screwed when they've had over a year to play the game. We're paying for new content here. People seem to be thrilled to pay the same $60 every year for the new Call of Duty or Fifa which offer less new content than what Horizons is promising. Don't get the logic here. Now what I WILL agree with is that FD is really just bad at comms. They tend to create more confusion than is necessary.

Don't worry, I spent more than that on food I didn't like. Have you tried caviar? I think it's disgusting but some people like it, the good thing is that there are other games you can play if ED isn't your thing. And you can always come back in a few years and see if it finally meets your first expectations.

This is a pint of real ale.

BSA-Pint-clip-6.png

My local sells this for a few pennies less than a fiver.

Over an evening spent in my local, I will likely enjoy 6-9 of these and/or other wonderful brews..

I will likely spend 3-4 hours in the pub. That means I am getting around an hours entertainment for about £15.00

I have clocked over 1,000 hours in ED since launch, which equates to, roughly 4p for each hour of entertainment. I hope to get similar value with Horizons.

I see no problem with the cost.
