Can Someone Please Explain AFMU Ammo/Repair?

So I have 5A AFMU on my Asp Explorer. It says it has 6,700 ammo and 187.6 repair. I also have about 14 AFMU refills. What I would like to know is how much would the AFMU be able to repair? Let's say all my modules drop down to 80%, will the 6,700/187.6 be able to repair all of them to 100% without a refill?

Here is my build: https://eddp.co/u/Sy2cX85U

The reason I ask is because I was thinking of swapping the 5A AFMU with the 3D Shield Generator doing 3A AFMU and 5D Shield Generator. Doesn't matter at this point as I'm already on my way to Beagle Point, but just wondering. I've made it all the way to Jaques Station and really had no use for the AFMU that much. The 3A AFMU has 4,000 ammo and 112 repair, would that be enough for a long haul trip or should I just stick with the 5A AFMU? Thanks in advance for all the replies.

While i don't know the exact numbers, the AFMU ammo does drop rather fast, and some systems take more ammo to repair than others.

On my Exploration Python, i have a 3A and 5A fitted, so they can repair each other. But in my trip to Sagittarius A*, I barely used either, and didn't need to refill either of them.

To answer your first question though, yes, it would likely repair 20% withouta refill.

Just wondering if you guys would swap the shields for AFMU on the explorer build? It says optimal mass is 165 with 3D shields yet my ship has a laden mass of about 385, that's a bit of a difference from what I can tell...

For exploration, look at the maximum mass of the shield. So long as your ships under that number it'll work. It'll be weak, but it'll work. You don't tend to need shields out in the black unless you fancy your self a quick run through some asteroids or want to land on a planet. Even then it's only really there as a safety net in case you "kiss" something harder than your ship or mess up a landing =D. I only run a A1 AFMU with a D3 shield if I'm 'splorin with an asp. If you have refills and or a SRV, you don't really need a big AFMU.

I am unsure exactly how afmu repair/ammo works. On the topic of replacing shields with an afmu I do not recommend doing that. Even undersized shields protect your ship's haul from bump damage when landing on planets. Also shields are based on the haul mass of your ship, which doesn't include modules of cargo.

Eh?... I'm not sure I'm understanding the underlined portion of your post. I'm sure cargo is a factor in shield strength, I'm sure I've collapsed a shield by brimming a ship with a shield at (iirc) 97% maximum hull weight.
If I am in fact wrong, could you ELI5 please?

AFMU is basically a roll of duct tape.
The larger the AFMU, the bigger the roll of tape, and the wider the tape.

Larger AFMU does more repairs faster than a smaller AFMU.

I keep one on my exploration ships, and a little spare in storage for my passenger ships.

I don't need them all that often, and usually end up needing them as a result of a fuel-scooping mishap, or to recover from white dwarf/neutron star boosting.

On a 5,200 ly trip in my Beluga, I used the entirety of a 2A AFMU once, after fuel scooping a binary star before discovering it was a binary star, and wound up flying between the stellar pair and getting quite hot in the process.

That's pretty much the only time I've ever used them, and I've never been in a situation where I'm going "I really need this..."

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think the 5A AFMU is overkill according to all the comments I read. I'll be swapping the AFMU and the Shield Generator. I'll get the 3A AFMU and probably 4A or 5D shields. Thanks again everyone.

I've just come back from a 15k trip and went with no Shields - but two 3A AMFUs. It worked well. I didn't need the shields. However, I didn't actually land on any planets. I'd definitely pack a shield for that.

Just my 10ps worth, even if you've already made your mind up :)

For exploring make sure you have plenty of materials for making more AFMU ammo, and I agree a spare AFMU so you can repair your main one, but neither needs to be big - explorers tend to have time to synthesise and reload AFMUs. Are the bigger ones aimed at combat jockeys?
