Newcomer / Intro Can someone point me to the information on "ignore list" for mining

I have seen it mentioned and discussed how you can set an ignore list for the collector limpets, but I can't find any info on how to do this to the limpets. I am sure it is very obvious but I am very new to the game and am just not finding it on my own. I would appreciate being pointed to the right area of either a website, or a forum post, or the in-game screen. Any help at all really will be appreciated.

You do it from your contacts panel, you select the item you want to ignore and choose ignore. You can't do it ahead of time, have to target the item first.

They could have made it easy by putting a checkbox next to the item in the right panel Material list.

But no, they decided to add it to the Contacts panel instead, so you'd have to first target it, and then click, and then select Ignore.

And, even better, with their method there's NO way to see which ones you have already ignored!

The UI folks were asleep on this one.

so is it even worth bothering with? sort of sounds like it might just be easier to pick up the stuff you don't want and sell it anyway rather than fiddling with the ignore option....or maybe at least for someone who is new to mining anyway.

I honestly expected something like you mentioned, a page somewhere in the ship systems where I could check and uncheck materials to be ignored, the way you describe it sounds unnecessarily complicated. Do you have to keep redoing the list? I mean once you have set a bunch of stuff on ignore, go and turn in all you have mined, logged out for the day, when you come back the next day, is the list persistent or do you have to do it over again?

The ignore function makes mining much more efficient. Unless you particularly like strip mining.

But there is no "ignore list". You have to select a fragment or canister of a mineral (or material, or commodity) to ignore it. You also have to select one the same way to un-ignore it, which is very clumsy IMO.

It can cause some minor problems. For example, I ignored gold fragments while mining. Last night I killed some pirates who dropped a bunch of gold canisters. I only noticed these by accident, as the canisters of an ignored mineral are invisible on the scanner. I had to un-ignore gold for my limpets to collect this loot.

thanks for the info, guess I will have to just see how it works for me. Maybe the devs will actually make it a list where you can check/uncheck materials, that would make so much more sense

appreciate the responses everyone, thanks very much

I believe an upcoming update has limpets ignoring materials that you have reached your capacity limit on.

okay another question about ignore....

....yes I am just getting around to finally mining.

I see when mining that some fragments seem to be combination of two things? for example a fragment will say Platinum / Indite. Does this mean the fragment is both of those metals?

If I click on that in contacts and chose ignore Indite, will it still pick that one up for the platinum and ignore the indite part of it?

I haven't been ignoring anything yet and just jettison/abandon the trash stuff, but would like some clarification on ignore when it comes to the fragments that seem to be made up of something good and something trash.

Yup, the latest update implements just that. You're ignoring a particular refined ore rather than the fragment itself. So if you have Indite on ignore, it will still pick up the fragment for the Platinum ore, and I believe your Refinery bin will ignore the Indite so you don't have to bother emptying it.

oh that's awesome. Thanks for the quick reply, I am back out to mining

God I love mining. I know it's not exciting like bounty hunting or whatever but I love it. I am one of those people who will be a crafter or trader or whatever in an mmo or single player game. I don't mind the action, I usually play a solo mage in fantasy mmo's like Elder Scrolls Online, but if given the choice I will do something more.....quiet and peaceful I guess.

thanks again for the info, really appreciate it

No probs. I like a bit of mining if I want to just relax playing the game...it's peaceful weaving in and out of the asteroids. It makes reasonable money (if you're not already a billionaire), especially if you can offload some cargo with mining missions.

My Clipper has about 200T cargo space...I load up about half that with limpets. Always go with a 'A' prospector limpet...they give greater yields on the asteroids. I then have 4 collector limpet controllers, 2 launching 2 collectors and 2 launching 1, for a total of 6 collectors...this usually works pretty well.

I also look to find still/almost still rocks as they're less dangerous generally, and they're less likely to spin around and knock a load of fragments flying outside the range of your collectors. Also, shoot towards the bottom of the asteroid...the fragments will generally fly off in a 'down' direction in relation to your ship, meaning the limpets are picking up the fragments below your ship, making it quicker for them to load them into your cargo hold...you can also speed this up by gently manoeuvring just above the cloud after you've emptied the asteroid, speeding up collection a bit more. Just be careful not to bump that asteroid as sometimes the fragments stay quite close.

Enjoy.

Edit: Also, Pristine Metallic is better for the 'good stuff' than Pristine Metal Rich...at first I thought that was a bit weird, but really metal-rich means 'mainly rocky with a lot of metal'. Metallic is 'mainly metal' for all intents and purposes, so you get better yields of the good stuff (Painite, Platinum, Osmium and such...I generally stick to the top 4 or 5 earners).

I have read several guides to prepare myself for the joy of mining...hehehe....I am one of those people who buys a new game then sits and reads the entire manual before even installing it

so the guides I used were:

a general guide to give me info
https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/4wmgja/general_mining_guide_20/

more info and the first guide I found since I love watching Obsidian Ant's videos
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/109990-Obsidian-Ant-s-Mining-Guide

this tool tells me where the nearest system with pristine reserves is and is SO useful
http://edtools.ddns.net/

currently I am still very new and have little money so I can only afford the Transporter 6 as my miner, but last night I did my first mining trip and made just over 1.2million. Here is my ship loadout which I am almost positive I got from an Obsidian Ant video although I can't for the life of me find it. I have watched so many of his videos and end up bookmarking and favouriting them all but then when I want to review something specific I can't find it.

But I am always looking for more guides and hints and tips. I figure the game is one of those that you never stop learning and never truly master

another question.....

when taking a mission, if it says I have two days to mine the stuff.....is that two days real time? I never really paid attention but is game time and real time different or is it the same?

Hi,

I have not used the ignore feature yet. If you ignore something, how do you change it back (so it is no longer ignored) ?

I see there is no ignore list, is that right?

Gb

while mining and there are fragments floating about, press 1 to open the left hand control panel

go to contacts

there will be a list of all the fragments out there

on the list of fragments move down to one that has a metal that you don't want to collect, (if there are two different in a single fragment it's okay, you will get a choice between the two)

once on the fragment that has the metal you don't want to collect, press space, it will then give you the option of ignoring it, move to yes and press space

same applies to un-ignoring something, open contact panel, find a fragment with the metal you no longer want to ignore, select it, choose do not ignore, press space

there is no actual ignore list you can view unfortunately. an actual list would be great that you can check and uncheck at any time...like back in the hangar at a base

however until they implement that (let's hope they do) this is the way you have to do it.

note: my understanding is that the ships computer remembers what you want to ignore, so in that sense it does maintain a list, just not one you can access. I have yet to confirm this myself, that the computer remembers the list, but several people have said that it is remembered

this guide:

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/4wmgja/general_mining_guide_20/

has a section titled "What to mine" and gives prices etc....but from that list you can see that there are only a few that are considered trash. But I like that it breaks it down into top 3 or 5 as well as commonly requested for missions etc.

this guide:

http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Miner

under availability and value, shows minerals, metals and chemicals, with rough values, but most importantly what types of rings you can pick up the item at.

please note that I am very new to the game and mining, and all the info above I have gained from research on various websites, youtube videos and here from the forums. very little of it is from actual personal experience. At this point I have only mined once, but this did show me how to use the ignore feature as well as how to un-ignore.

You can only "un-ignore" something via the contacts panel - so there needs to be something out there that you are currently ignoring so you can select it in the list and then choose "remove from ignore list" (or some such wording - I can't remember correctly).

There is no separate "ignore list" that you can view.

Time in game runs continually so you have two days to mine and hand in the stuff from when you accepted the mission.
This is why it isn't a good idea to pick up missions just before logging off for the night and be wary of missions running over Tuesdays as that is when updates usually happen and the time still runs even if the servers are down.

The UI folks were asleep on this one.

Checkboxes next to the item in your inventory wouldn't work for cargo/fragments or anything else you don't currently have.

I doubt the UI folks were asleep - they just chose the minimal viable option. And that only works in the contacts panel, even if badly.

I understand time runs continually....but the time frame on the mission...if it says I have two days, and I pick it up say wednesday morning at 9, do I have til friday morning at 9 to turn it in....or does game time run differently? Is an hour in real time the same as an hour game time.
