Can we have a better map interface please?

Death rant incoming.

The useless map interface cost me at least an entire minute of bull ing around, seizing up, and terrible interfacing, and resulted in me dying to a breached canopy one second before docking. I'd like to thank the useless piece of for costing me 1m credits. This is the first time I've been mad at this game, and I am irate.

If I back out from the system map, can you please show me the star I was just looking at, instead of forcing me to navigate to it again? Because frankly, I tend to scan the system for places I can jump to, and don't always remember exactly where it was. On that note, why can I not see certain stars unless I zoom to some arbitrary distance from them? Why can't I just look at my system and see all the systems within a certain distance? If I'm looking for alliance stars, why show me one that's 100ly away when there's one that's DIRECTLY ALONG THE PATH AND IS CLOSER? And on that note, given that we gain system info for systems we visit or outright purchase system into for, can we please add some quality of life features to the map? It'd be nice to target the closest Alliance system, or find systems that have factioned stations, or stations at all, without having to fumble through badly loading each system's map.

Really any and all of those improvements would be welcome.

Well, I'm not angry or irate but everything else you described is basically exactly what I've been thinking. +1

I've actually been worried about this as well. My Galaxy/system maps already take a long time to open up. PowerPlay is supposed to add a lot of functionality to the maps. I worry about what this will do to their speed.

One thing that might be helpful to the OP is when in the galaxy map, BEFORE clicking on the system map for a particular system, click on "Select" (the pin icon) then on the system map. This way once you exit the system map it will take you right back to that star system in the galmap!

There are a lot of small improvements in 1.3 I think you will like.

  • Clicking back in the system map will take you back to the exaxct same place you left.
  • Links in Galnet and powers screens take you to the systems in the galaxy map.
  • Click back in the galaxy map to return to the previous screen. The galaxy map will be at the same place the next time you open it.
  • Click exit in galaxy map to return to ship view.
  • Select targets and plot routes in the system map, even to stations in systems 100s of LY away.

And the old bug with the pop up menu closing when you move the mouse to click on the buttons appears to have been fixed. At least I've not had any problems in 1.3 and I got it all the time in 1.2.

But I do second his request for that particular tweak: making the galaxy map stay focused on the system you were just viewing when you go from system map to galaxy map.

That's the way it works in 1.3. Everything asked for in this thread is already in 1.3.

Oh ok. Haha I admit, I was unobservant--I have the beta, and the only thing I noticed different was that you could select a particular station. I guess I've been too focused on making credits so that I could buy the Courier and Diamondback and set everything up the way I wanted as soon as it was released to fool around with the Beta enough... which turned out to be largely unnecessary when they rolled back the 10% module charge; I should've just kept my Conda geared up. But oh well!

You're not that unobservant. I had to open up the beta to check and I wasn't sure what they had changed. I just knew that all the little things that used to annoy me weren't any more. Most of the improvments are so natutral that you don't notice them if you are not looking.

I like the idea of an additional search function from the Galaxy Map - "Find nearest .......... " and the options would cover everything from Faction to System Economy to nearest inhabited system. I spent a lot time originally looking for an Alliance planet so I could collect my bounties :)

The good potential technical enhancements not withstanding, I have an additional suggestion that I think the OP can implement immediately: don't look at the galaxy map when moving in or out of stations.

I wouldn't stare at a real map or my in-car navigation system while attempting to park my car or when existing a car park, and suspect few of us would. So this is one of those expensive mistakes that should serve to condition appropriate behavior in-game too: I'm almost certain you won't make that mistake again!

This is the first thing that I thought of when I read this thread.

Thanks for the general input on this, I'm glad I'm not the only one irritated with the map. Hopefully a lot of the updates fix this.

Yea! The data's there, it's not like a search engine for known things is so unrealistic.

I uh.....I think you should read my post again, you completely missed the point.
