Can we please get rid of Genetic Diversity in Exobiology or at least limit it to 500 Meters?

Oh I like this idea!

Also, why not have the SRV radar show a colored thing for lifeforms, like it does for geo?

Because it's not showing the geo at all, it's showing the mats that are attached to the geo features. The old style Horizons bio that have mats do indeed show up on the SRV scanner because of the mats. Personally I think there should be a change of function, if I am looking to shoot stuff, mats for instance, that function should work for the SRV in combat mode, if I am looking analyse bio when I am in analysis mode it should show bio locations. Whether that can be done or not I don't know, since the scanner doesn't actually show geo maybe that is because the geo is procedurally generated and the it wouldn't work for bio because of that? I am not sure exactly how the SRV scanner is coded so that would have to be up to the devs to work out whether or not it could be done!

Thats interesting, but I don't see why it couldn't be modified to work that way, it can work any way the devs want and its not hard to make it canon.

I don't disagree that maybe it can do that, the hand held scanner certainly can so why shouldn't the SRV scanner, but I'm only a player not one of the coders.

I believe that the SRV doesn't show Odyssey specific signals because it's still a Horizons feature, and it would invalidate part of the on foot mechanics.
From a purely practical point of view it doesn't make much sense, but I can see why they kept on foot specific activities separate.
My guess is that, when Odyssey and Horizons are finally merged, some mechanics will be extended, like scans form the SRV, or possibly picking up raw materials on foot.
Maybe even a new, exploration oriented SRV?

Until then, the SRV will gather dust when I scan plants (the Scarab is completely useless to me, and only a waste of time) and my exobiology ship is the Hauler: she lands absolutely everywhere!

I believe there's only species over 500m, and that still only goes to 800m. Elite Observatory with MattG's plugins will tell you exactly what range your bio is and when you have gone far enough away to sample the next one, it's such a time saver it's well worth it, well unless you are on PS or Xbox I guess. There's nothing in the bio that requires 5 klms separation!

Electricae have a diversity range of 1000m and that is the absolute limit. Tubus and Osseus have an 800m range; Bacteria, Fonticula and Stratum, 500m; and everything else is 300m or less.

Yes I posted the correct range in the 7th post in thread, I guess you didn't read that far;

My bad, apologies.

Personally I am not sure of the usefulness of the genetic diversity factor at all, it's not useful in a scientific sense and seems to be designed merely to encourage players to spend more time on the ground. If you were testing for genetic diversity you would need far larger range of distances to check and probably intervening features like mountains. Two patches of plants a couple of hundred meters of a kilometer apart are not going to give genetic diversity. All we are really doing is collecting a couple of samples from the same species, and we could do that in a few steps.

If you were checking that the same species is found all over the planet you aren't going to do that with our tests, and we already know that from the surface probes, seeing if they were genetically the same planet wide, well that would require sampling from very widely spread and diverse locations. So what we need is to do away with the current genetic diversity sampling for just 3 samples of local plants, and add a bonus for sampling the same species across the planet, which would of course require storing smaples on the ship maybe or some other method of storing multiple samples of different life forms.

They need to do something because the current process is a bit......silly and as I said purely designed to get us to stay longer on the surface.
