Can we please have longer ship names?

I realized the other day that I don't have enough characters available for some of my desired longer ship names. My current ship name is exactly the maximum length, and it only extends halfway across the info bar in my ship's HUD, there is plenty of space there.

But with ship prefixes and suffixes for squadrons, ship type, etc. We don't have much space left to work with.

I love the idea, just because twenty-three characters (or whatever it is) doesn't really offer a great deal of room for creativity.

Sadly, I think there would be an issue when rendering names on ships' exteriors, when we have nameplates showing. It could presumably be somewhat solvable by adding a narrower nameplate font (or better yet, our choice from a selection of different fonts), but this seems like it would be a tonne of work for FD that could be spent on more crucial things.

In any event, I think most people are probably happy enough with the status quo, especially those of us who remember when we weren't able to name our ships at all. What we have now is definitely a thing of beauty, albeit a limited one.

Good thoughts, I was wondering if the name tags had something to do with the limit, or maybe the cockpit view when locked on a target with a long name.

I'd be perfectly happy for name plates to only work with short names though, if that's what it takes to get more letters.

Why include your ship type and squadron in the name? You know what they are and anyone else who targets the ship will see those details anyway.
