Horizons Can we recall ships just a bit closer

May seem silly but, why does our ships being a mk3 viper in this case so small enough to land anywhere, land so far away when i'm on a nice level peace of ground, frontier can we have them land just a we bit closer... instead of chasing them qtr way round the planet, would help just a little...

Seconded - had my Cobra Mk IV land too far away for my liking on too many occasions on otherwise quite flat terrain. But I'm sure this will improve over time.

As far as I know the ship will only land when it has clearance underneath for the SRV to load into the ship. Obviously if the ground is bumpy it will look for the smoothest point to land, never had it more than a couple of K's from my SRV though.

Didn't have much issue with this in my Python, but right after I started an exploration voyage in my ASP it happens all the time. I'll be on a big flat plain and it will decide to land a mile away on the other side of a rough patch.. I call it the "catch me if you can" ship.. It's lead to some interesting return trips to the ship on some ice planets. I usually swear at it a little, then laugh while I leave my big flat plain to cross no mans land all the way to my ship ;). I'm sure things will improve over time.

Nope, have had plenty of instances where the ship will ignore the 1-2km of nice smooth flat ground I am on to go park up or down a ridge or across rough terrain.

Yeah at times its anoying, when it's a large open plain and the ship lands almost a km away. Some times I fly over where I was just to see if I can land there and yup.

I usually get my ship in between 300-700 meters. Maybe the size of the ship makes a difference? Occasionally, it will be 1km or more but usually when I recall it while I'm exploring ome bumpy terrain. A lot of times, I get a hover-pickup but I think that is a bug, yes? If so, I really appreciate the bug. It's gotten me out of crappy situations.

Most fun I've had is when I recalled my ship (Asp) and it landed kms away... the other side of an aggroed defence turret that I had just run away from. I figured the game would be smart enough not to land within the threat zone, so I circled around and boarded. When I boarded, though, I started to hear the deafening roar of massive turret blasts pounding light whisk of fairy wings brushing against my shields and started to lose rings fast. Had to high-tail it out of there.

While we're at it can we make it where I can activate the ship's auto-land feature anytime? Like even when I'm in it?

I'd grind for that mod

Second that.
I tested it a couple of times. I recalled my Asp, it landed 1 km away from me then I went there, dismissed the ship and drew back 150-200 meters around then recalled it again.
Odly enough Aspy landed around 1 km away again. It might be a part of the game mechanic though.

Under hilly conditions, sure it makes sense; but when you're on a plane of dirt flat enough to make a footballer cry, it's ridiculous for the ship to land a km away.

I was once in a very rough patch and recalled the ship, which kindly landed only 400 meters away. Except that I couldn't get under due to a bump. So sent the ship away and recalled it 3 more times and it landed in exactly the same spot! Finally, I pulled the SRV up as close a I could to the hatch and sent the ship away. I then moved forward a couple of meters and recalled the ship figuring it would land somewhere else. Nope, not a chance! But at least this time when it landed I was in position to board!. Bordered the ship, moved a few meters away, landed and then proceeded to get the rest of the cargo and flew off.
I should have called that ship the "Obstinate Asp"! I'm sure, in my frustration, that I called it a few more "colorful" things... :D

Anytime my Ship dares to land more than 500m away from me for no reason, I open up on it with everything the little SRV got until I reach it.
On top of that, the Ship departure is modified : after liftoff, the Ship is afterburned straight into Terrain.

( hoping that the [expletives] stupid onboard Computer might have learned something :D )

(another typical day... nearest suitable landing spot : literally 10m away, good & flat terrain everywhere - Ship lands a Mile away instead)

(I always do that)

I have never understood why the ship can't land right back at the same exact spot you landed at in the first place? Obviously that spot was level enough and the ship was able to unload the SRV without issues. So again, WHY can't the ship simply come back down and land at the same spot we put down at in the first place?

The current system forces me to keep my ship on the surface if at all possible. If I am loading up some salvage from a crash site, I want my ship to be as close to that crash site as I can get which for me is about 200 clicks. What I usually do now is if I need to dismiss the ship or it leaves on its own, when it lands itself at some stupid distance away, I end up taking off and flying it right back to my original landing site.

Surely FD can program our ships to do the same thing when recalled?

The other thing that doesn't make sense is WHY can't we program our ship to Auto-Land with US IN IT? If you fly with a Docking Computer, why can't the DC land the ship on the surface of a planet for us if we want? I have no problem doing this manually, but I have always thought it strange that the ship can take off and land by itself, but ONLY when we are not onboard!

Seems a bit strange if you ask me.

+1, agreed. I've had some decent luck lately but often enough it still likes to land behind 2 mountain ridges away...

Actually, 200 clicks is a stupid distance away as "clicks" is another way to say kilometers...

Ship dismissal and recall was only bodged on to "solve" the srv refueling debacle.
Like many"features" it hasn't really been thought through. Will probably get better in time.
