Can we talk about sentry skimmers

Sentry skimmers are by far the most annoying "ship" in the game for me.

Mainly due to their magical ability to knock out your shields and engines just by touching them. Why is this a thing? Is it because FDEV hates players doing planet things in their ships? Yeah, how dare we use our clearly more powerful, more capable and more efficient ship for assaulting a base instead of our puny, weak SRV.

So by simply touching a sentry skimmer, it will immediately knock out your shields completely as well as disabling your thrusters for a few seconds so that you can hit the planet's surface and take hull damage. Sure, EMPs are a thing but on a craft the size of a skimmer versus an entire ship? And also since my shields are up in the first place, how was the skimmer able to contact my ship in order to release a magically large charge to overload my shields? And if so, why is this tactic not used anywhere else? Imagine how useful this would be if a ship could incorporate this weapon. But no, that would be too overpowered. Oh but it's fine for an AI skimmer to have this overpowered weapon just so that players are forced to use their SRV. Inconsistencies.

Secondly, it's impossible to target a sentry skimmer using your ship unless it's already firing on you. Yes, they are small targets, but materials are even smaller targets, don't have a heat signature yet the ship has no trouble picking those up. So why not skimmers? Thus making the only good way to kill skimmers effectively is in the SRV. (Or dumbfires, but my issue here is the ability to target skimmers from the ship). Can I just say that planetary base assaults are virtually impossible for me because of how ridiculously overpowered the skimmers are, the magic automatic repairing of the generators and turrets, and the inability for my own turret to even aim properly at targets. What's with the jitter on my SRV turret? The base turrets don't have that jitter. Do servos not lock properly in 3304?

Finally, although this point isn't related to skimmers, I feel as if it should be mentioned. Our ship has a data link scanner. Why can't we use this scanner to scan the data points in settlements from our ships? Ah yes, I see. Because we have to use the SRV.

Also: "Blaze your own trail", then let me use my OWN SHIP.

Skimmers are supposed to be SRV level challenges.

But yeah I agree that they've gone the wrong way with by giving skimmers superpowers. Those bases should just have guns and patrols that make trying to do them in ships nearly impossible.

They could also "encourage" people to use SRVs by making the consequences of killing skimmers less than carpet bombing a installation.

You can scan planetary data points in your ship.

You just have to get REAL close.

The thing is though, the skimmers are very easy to kill in an SRV (or ignore completely - 3 or 4 pips to shields) - they're poor shots and spend half their time bouncing into the other structures.

However some of the bases they encourage you to do in an SRV (the +++ ones) are nightmares too - having to drive your SRV across 2km of bumpy open ground under constant aerial bombardment isn't fun. Especially if you've only got one SRV*. Am I going to fly to the nearest station and buy another SRV (5-10 minutes) for another (likely futile) attempt or am I just going to abandon the mission? Hmmm... I guess you could do it as a wing mission, but it wasn't declared as one.

The whole planetary base scan/attack missions need properly looking at. They're either ridiculously hard or ridiculously easy.

*(I suppose you could try and fly in, land, deploy and dismiss before the turrets take your ship out... yeah, no.)

Can you still do that? I have done it before, but I tried it recently (same ship) and I couldn't target the beacon anymore.

It is my preferred 'only got a few minutes, lemme see what they have' mission to run.

I do it in my Imp Courier just in case things go sideways the rebuy is minimal.

Higher security settlements have much stronger Anti-Ship defenses compared to Ant-SRV defenses. So skimmers aside, if you would use a ship, you need a capable ship which usually also means a higher Rebuy if things go bad. The SRV is pretty much disposable. Also, you could use an SLF if you want...

I only once assaulted a base in an SRV to destroy a power grid that I just couldn't find. I must have destroyed about 50 skimmers on the way - to bad I did not take any skimmer missions .. duh.

Just scout around in your ship just outside the main target area, wait till you see blue on your sensors and with a little look around you'll find a smaller base.

Put down, SRV out, kill Skimmers, repeat 'till you're done. Much easier.

Easier and less bounties to incur, but takes longer compared to the base constantly spawning skimmers.
