Can you be friendly and have ranks with both empire and federation?

Has anyone who ranked in sorbago tried to side with the feds in the onionhead blockade to see if they can up their position there, and if this affects rep with empire at all?

I don't know for certain, but I seem to recall somebody talking about rank missions reaching a point where they decrease rep with the other faction(s). I don't do much with combat or any of the factions at the moment.

I've been trading in the federation recently, and have routinely seen an up arrow on the Federation reputation without any corresponding down arrow on either alliance or empire.

Doing tradings and missions at the border between Fed/Empire, you can even have blue arrows for both at the same time.
