Can you be in both the Federation and Imperial Navy at once?

The title says it all. I have been looking around and have yet to find a definitive answer to this question. I would eventually like the get the Imperial Clipper, but my friends and I currently spend most of our time way outside of empire space and don't plan on making the 200LY jump until we finish fitting our cobras. I keep seeing naval advancement missions for the Federation in the systems I do play in and would certainly like to get the benefit associated with a higher rank, but I also do not want to lock myself out of the possibility of getting the Imperial Clipper.

If I cannot be in both factions at once, is it possible to somehow to at least switch factions down the road?

Well that response came faster than expected. I think I'll wait until I get a few more responses or a definitive link to an official post before I make the plunge into the federation navy though, just to be safe. If there was a single overarching feature I would want added to this game, it would be "clarity". Clarity of mechanics, clarity of trade routes (you know, the fact that they flat out lie half the time), and clarity on weapon/internal stats, and clarity on minor stuff like the navy choice. Thanks for the response.

I have rank in both fed and empire atm, just try not to upset either one while you are working towards your ranks.

Yes, you can. Currently there are no repercussions for doing that, but it might change in the future - FDEV might add some sort of a twist to make life of a "double agent" difficult.
