Can you complete mining missions by buying the stuff?

Say I pick a mission for mining 15 units of cobalt. What if I go buy the cobalt in a market, can only use it to complete the mission?

Yes, you can buy the cobalt and use it to complete the mining mission. This also applies to water mining missions. I think that's about it though; all the other missions demand resources that can only be obtained by mining.

Materials like Osmium, Painite, Platinum, Praseodymium and Samarium can only be sourced from mining. You can't buy them on the market.

they only fixed that you can't take a mining mission for cobalt,
and buy the cobalt from the very same station you got the mission, to turn it in

BUT i think the only thing they fixed, was putting in a time delay until it registers cargo for any "fetch and deliver" missions you just took.

Yep,

One of the lesser used (and more modest) "exploits" is to find a station where there are missions asking you to mine/source commodities but those commodities are also for sale in the market.
You can buy, say, Cr10,000 of Cobalt and use it to fulfill a mission that pays Cr200,000.

I guess some of the faction contacts don't like mixing with the riff-raff in the market. :p

I wonder if someone else could mine it for you? It works for the engineer requirements.

Simon

depends on the requirement
noone can take the "mine at least 500 tonnes of material" since the correct phrasing would be "refine at least 500tonnes"

but the "bring 10t painite" or "50t Bromelite" can be done by a friend.

eg. when the streamer Malic_VR wanted to unlock the plasma-gun engineer, he went out mining and after an hour he had not even 10t of the bromelite... then i met with him and dumped the remaining tonnes i gathered in half an hour with my corvette for him :)

^ this. I can't simply turn in 500T of ore for the engineer mission to unlock, I must mine it.

You can do this any time you want, but the controlling faction of the station will not give you a good letter of reference (not to mention how it screws up your credit score).

That has been fixed. Now you can't hand in goods you've just bought at the same station.

I think a jump has to be involved, so you could probably buy the goods, jump to another system, return and hand them in. Could be worth it when combined with a salvage mission

March 2021: Yes you CAN buy goods (if available in a market) that satisfy the mining missions - just confirmed it. 50mil = Ka-Ching!

I made a couple hundred million in an hour or so turning in cargo I purchased at the same station recently. The missions for that dried up pretty quickly though. RNG means it's not a reliable source of income, but I always check the mission board and commodities market every time I land at a station. Sometimes you get lucky.
