Can you have multiple games on the go at once?

Could you start one "profile" to play as an explorer and start another as a trader? Each with their own ship etc? And flick between the two?

Or do you just have the one profile/existance in game?

Yes as far as I know you can have 3 commanders on the go at the same time
but not in the same instance

You can have 3 commanders (subject to change) at one time in one account. But you could only ever be actually in the game with one at a time, unless you buy another account.

To do that you would need two accounts and two installs of the game on your PC, with your explorer on one account and your trader on the other. Can't do it any other way since its one character online per account at a time, as others have stated.

Multipe accounts and characters on one PC was popular in Eve Online, although Elite will be far more demanding so you'd need a top end PC to run two copies of ED effectively imo.

That sound fine... Cool! So you could try another profession without losing another instance you've built up!

You can try your hand at any profession you like without starting a new commander. Once you're a seasoned pirate, you might not get so much work as an escort for trade ships though! Switching from trader to explorer should be easy enough.

But yes, if you want to run up to three careers in parallel, that's no problem.

Profession?

You mean we are starting as a trader and thus can only trade? Or is that only explorers can explore?

As far as i know we all start as we start and then decide if we want to do a bit of trading, or some pirate killing, or maybe some pirating. Along the path you take you'll also do some exploring.

You chose what you want to do, there isn't a "career path" that you must follow :)

I image an explorer will be in a very different location in the galaxy, and flying a very different ship to a trader for example... So it might be easier to simply have two "profiles" than change career path, only to find out it doesn't fit you.

Yep, it could take hours to swap one character from explorer to trader, depending how far from the shops you are...
and that's even assuming you have two ships

Ah, so if you're wealthy enough you may have different ships, aimed at different purposes!

But that said to explore, you'll need to be at a very different place than to trade for example? And that could be quite a good few jumps and hassle?!

You could also have your ship kitted out as something in between the extremes. Not the ultimate explorer, nor the ultimate trader but somewhere on the spectrum between them.

Well there's not much point exploring tesco's car park....

You're going to be miles from anywhere.

He would be provocative to be a pirate and to steal the goods to a victim, then to become a trader and to resell at the victim the goods stolen from the victim, for a good price

Isn't learning how the job is done half of the fun?

The more you fly the better pilot you become,
the more stellar systems you map, the better you learn to read your sensor data and aquire a feeling where to look for planets,
the more you mine the better... you get the idea.

Remember how good it felt the first time you docked your ship successfully in one piece?

I expect if you purchased 2 copies of the game this would work, if you could have 2 instances of E.D. running, or 2 computers .

Sneaky :)

Pirate: "Stand and deliver! Your cargo or your life! Ha ha haaarrr!"

Trader: "Oh noes! Here Mr Pirate, have 10 tons of Trumble Traps and 20 credits - it's all I have left after my wife ran off with a Tentacled Thargoid. Everything! Please don't kill me!"

Pirate: "So be it! Ha ha haaarr! I thank thee for the cargo - be on your way safely Trader, and may fortune smile upon you!"

Trader: "Thankyou Mr Pirate for your mercy!"

Pirate: "By the way, do you want to buy one ton of used Trumble Traps? Only 20 credits!"

Indeed, there are no classes or professions in ED, but activities. A player is a trader by trading, not by selecting some "menu option". And nothing prevents a player that usually trades to do a bit of bounty hunting.

After reading this thread, I still have this question:

In SP mode (online) I believe these limitations will apply. However, in SP Offline mode (not logged in, no internet connection), I think these limits no longer apply?

What limitations exactly? The number of captains you can have? Because the "playing simultaneously" is a moot point in SP offline.
