Newcomer / Intro Can you tell who scanned you, fast?

When I get scanned in a combat zone, I want to see who scanned me, I want to kill it fast.
Any visual ways to tell who did the scan?

The ship scanning you is pointing their nose at you. A way which works at Nav Beacons and Extraction Sites is to look at your left panel, Contacts tab I believe, and see which ships have been named. The scanning works both ways

Edit: Remember when yer being scanned at a Nav Beacon, the scanner is not necessarily a baddie. It could be a cop or a bounty hunter checking on yer legal status. The best way to see the intentions of the ship scanning you is to check for messages in the top left comms panel. Text from goodies doesn't usually appear until a wee bit after the scan

The reason why I'm not sure if that method works in CZs is because that's not how I select my targets there. I have a button for "Target Highest Threat"

The name of the ship is displayed in the chat when it's a pirate. Pirates always give a message when they scan: "I see all", "let me see what's in your cargo hold", etc. When the police scan you, there is no message.

At least not until it is all over and you get a move along from them.

That doesn't happen in a RES. You only get occasional general messages.

The main thing is that, for a pirate, the message comes at the same time as you get "Scan detected", so you can immediately target it from the panel and shoot it without waiting to see if it's wanted because you know it will be a pirate, since only they do that, and it's a pirate message. If no message is showing when you get "scan detected", it's the police, so disregard it and carry on.

Mysteriously, even if you come into the RES as "wanted", the police don't seem to be able to see it when they scan you, but if you become wanted in the instance, all the police will turn on you immediately without scanning. I'm dure it didn't used to be like that.

My memory is pretty poor, but I think it's always been like that. And I think it's working as intended as well. There's no need for a scan if you've seen the illegal act with yer own eyes

One thing that has definitely changed tho is the ability to attack someone immediately who has scanned you. Doing that before you'd scanned them to ensure they're wanted used to change yer own status to wanted

It has been a while as well, not much fighting out in Colonia with an ASPx but the last I remember is on your sensors you can see the ship inside of your first circle, meaning the ship is rather close. As the ship in first circle will be a triangle not a square and with never be green.
This all being said it also depends on what your sensors range is currently set at. I run full range normally but in Res Zones or Combat Zones I set sensors around half range to see closer.
Mining I run short range because I like to hit things all of the time...:)

Anyone please correct me if any of this is wrong as it's been quite a while since fighting....o7

Edit: sorry, you're gonna want to bind a key to scroll through ships to.

As a player, who spends a lot of time in the RES (50,000 kills in the last three months) and now no. 2 on Inara soon to be no.1, I can tell you that it's very simple:
You get the scan detected message, which you can see and hear;
You look at your comms;
If no message, you ignore it;
If a pirate message, you look at its name, bring up the contacts panel, target it and shoot it.
if you're already shooting someone, remember the name, and as soon as you're ready, target it in the pamel and shoot it, hoping that the police didn't get it first. They normally hang around for ages after they scanned you, so you can nearly always target them in the panel minutes after they scanned you.

Where the heck do you set or play with your sensor range? That's the first I've heard of this, knowing me, I inadvertently set mine to short range and never knew it.
