Newcomer / Intro Can you use silent running to sneak into stations?

If not, how do you get into the large stations with lots of security if you took an illegal mission from there, say to collect black boxes or slaves? There has to be a way to get past the security ships and the station scan.

Silent running basically "hides" all of your head within your ship.. which means your ship gets hot - really hot (since the heat isn't being vented into space like normal).

Generating heat is a separate matter - you can manually turn off engines / shields (which tend to gen the most heat). If you turn those off, you are basically in silent running and don't need to turn on "silent running mode". Except if you do turn off engines and shields... well... you're just floating around on whatever inertia you had!

So there's 2 ways to sneak in:
1. Silent running MODE: you turn it on, build up heat and try to get into the station quickly before you cook internally (using heat sink dispensers as yabba suggested makes this really easy)
or
2. Use inertia to glide in while being ACTUALLY cold: point towards the station, engage up the speed (hope you're lined up correctly) and turn off assist, then turn off engines and shields manually. You'll start cooling down as you fly in. Turn those all on rapidly when you are really close to the station and you'll zoom in. This is really, really tough.

And keep in mind, even if they start scanning you, once you are IN the station, the scans are canceled (because they don't have line of sight anymore). I can usually get in via option 1 without any difficulty.

So far if i keep cruise speed i can get into the slot faster than the police ships can get behind me and begin a scan , but yes silent running same time shud make it harder to Lock on to you and start a scan. its the smugglers way of life :D

Its the graf above the fuel gauge that indicate lost heat emissions that other ships use to "see" you whit , its Connected to internal heat that you see left of scanner, the more heat internal the harder it is to keep a low profil and the "silent running" does is Close the heat vents to make you a colder target thus harder to "see" remember this just hide you better on scanner but other ships can spot you visualy so speed and run Cold is the trick to be a sucsessful smuggler. :D

Have a small ship (not mandatory but it's easier)
Take aim over 10 km away.
Get some speed. More means requirement of quicker reflexes to brake later.
Engage silent running.
Request docking permission after being closer than 7,5km.
Pray that something does not block you (like other ship or station wall if you did not target properly) since you don't have control over your ship. Without shields you are more vulnerable.
Disable silent running when you get inside the station, brake if needed (so you don't crash into end of station wall) and land to your designated pad.

You can use stealth but there is another way!!

Full power to engines and boost like mad. This can be tricky if you don't slow down at the right moment but time it right and you'll be home and dry before anyone tries to scan you.

You can but they can still spot/scan you if they get close enough.

There is a flaw with AI around stations though. They only spawn after a player jumps in and starts a session (usually 15-20 secs before random traffic starts to populate). The authority ships appear immediately, but wont start scanning until they start their patrol path which takes a few seconds. In a fast ship you can beat them every single time :)

This wont work if your entering another player's existing session/instance though. But it's easy to tell if you are, because there will be loads of NPCs around already. In which case take a run up and use chaff :p
