Can your ship be destroyed?

I was considering upgrading to the premium beta ...however upon doing a bit more research, I discovered the possibility my beloved Cobra MKIII could be destroyed via combat or poor station parking?

Have always enjoyed the elite games from the moment I started playing the original and the versions that followed.
So when ED showed up on kickstarter, I never hesitated to purchase it as it never dawned on me I may actually lose the ship I start in?

I did try to find something little more concrete in regards to losing or not losing ones ship but sadly I did not have much luck on the forums, would someone be so kind as to direct me to a link or even better just clarify my confusion?

Thanks

Yep, your ship can be destroyed.

In real life you can destroy your car by smashing it into something, and if you live in some parts of the world by it being shot by an RPG.

In the old games your ship could be destroyed too, then you had to reload/start again.

There is insurance though, which will recompense you with a new ship, if you can afford the excess.

Or, dock carefully, avoid trouble.

Finally, this is a beta. Very buggy. Some bugs are ship destroying.

You can lose any ship you are in and have two options......buy insurance so you get your ship back (plus its equipment loadout), or get a basic Sidewinder for free....the one you start the game with.

While I appreciate the response, it was not really necessary to state the obvious with the real world examples...trust me I got the point.

Well guess until I have sufficient experience and insurance, I will attempt to avoid most if not all combat situations...and parallel parking in a station! :)

Just wanted to clarify something for the OP. If you purchased a Cobra pledge level at KS, you'll always be able to restart the game in a Cobra. Current expectation is that if you get killed without insurance in a game where you started with a Cobra, you'll be busted down to Sidewinder (although you could obviously just abandon that game and restart, in which case you'll have the Cobra again).

Finally, Beta is subject to resets and AFAIK everyone starts in a Sidewinder.

Thank you for the response, guess I was rather hoping the initial package we all purchased be it sidewinder cobra or whatever would always be there for us (minus upgrades of course) in event of disaster.

Insurance is a must obviously in light of this new information, since one can't save the game and try for a do over in the midst of a dog fight? ;)

Insurance is automatic, you just pay for the excess if you lose a ship. Is about 5% of the total value of the ship and equipment. Cargo is not covered.

In the full game you will be able to borrow credits and go into debt if you cannot afford the excess, so you can't really lose a ship if you don't mind the loansharkey consequences.
