Cancelling the re-applying for star system

I selected Starport first my first facility after applying for my system.

I calculated that it would take a significant amount of time to build this (no surprises there!)

Would the materials required be significanlty less if I had selected a settlement instead?

If so, is it possible to cancel my application for the system and then resubmit a claim for the same system so that I can select a settlement instead to reduce the time required?

Yes, I think as long as you (or anyone else) hasn't made any deliveries to the system yet. But someone else could nab the system in the time between you letting it go and getting it again.

I did the same thing when Trailblazers first came out and it worked fine, so as long as nothing has changed in the meantime you should be good.

An outpost will only need approximately 20,000 in total.

I have no idea if it is now too late to cancel other than by waiting 4 weeks for it to fail.
