General Cannon and Frag sounds

'Lo folks!
If there is one thing I think all of us can agree on, it's the high quality of ED's soundscape - it is wonderful. From the eerie whispering of Witchspace to the terrifying crackle of a canopy cracking, ED's sound is fantastic.

One place where the sound could be improved a bit is in the sounds of a couple of weapons - namely the Cannons and the Frag Cannons. I've recently started playing with them, and while the weapons themselves are excellent (nothing beats watching a pirate fly into range of a Corvette's full suite of G5 frags and returning to the dust from whence he came ;) ) they don't sound too authoritative. It's just a wee bit disconcerting to see a pirate Anaconda ripped apart to the gentle strains of 'Puh' and 'Phut!'

C'mon, where's the BOOM? The CRAAAACK! of the frag's gigantic shotguns? Cannons and frags should not sound like Furby having a pillowfight with Elmo!

Ahem. :D
Whatcha think, folks?
Cheers!

The volume of the weapon sounds depends on the location of those weapons relative to the cockpit of your ship. 4xc2 frags on an FDL sound pretty loud (and cool, even just deploying frags sounds cool imo), on a chieftain 2xC3 frags on top are barely audible. Could be bugged or inconsistently applied volumes I guess :)

So maybe fly a smaller ship & see if that improves the situation for you? I don't think there's anything wrong with the actual sounds when they are audible though.

I dunno - on my Krait I have the cannons almost hanging off my ears and they sound like a frog farting. All sound effects maxed as well. They're cannons - three feet of boom-stick! Chuckle - they should sound like cannons.

If your issue is with the volume rather than the actual sound effect then yes, I agree it should be looked at. The volume levels got screwed up way back in around 2.2 or 2.3, I have hearing difficulties & struggle to pick out quite a lot of sounds, although I use 5.1 & it's usually enough to locate the source directionally.

It's entirely possible that if the sound was louder, they might sound closer to reality - it's hard to tell 'cause they sound like an exploding muppet.
At any rate, I'm quite familiar with how cannons sound in real life; it'd be lovely if they sound a bit more like that.

Xeno's Paradox roars around in a tight arc, Large multis hammering as the last of the Anaconda's shields fail. The huge ship pops chaff, rolling desperately into its enemy as the crimson Krait screams under Boost away from the withering barrage, her nose never leaving the target. Metal blasts from the Pirate's hull as the MC's hammer relentlessly, the Paradox unable to get to the stern of the ship but pounding the hull. Alarms shriek in the cabin; the air burns my lungs as the OVC/INC multis slag the Anaconda, her hull dropping to 50%...30%...10%. The Pirate makes a last desperate gamble, popping chaff and trying to Jump away. But it's too late. The Krait has her. I snarl with triumph, roll and boost into her, lining the Cannons up on her stern and...'poot!'
One more Pirate killed but...sigh...

The sound and effects on Cannons are downright pathetic. When I have used them, I sometimes had a hard time telling if I hit, or if the Cannon even fired.
