Newcomer / Intro Cannot communicate with authentication server?

Hi,

Haven't played for a few days but am getting the following error:

Login failure - the game failed to communicate with the authentication server

Notice from some comments that this can be caused by the time being off on one's system - mine has just updated to reflect the clocks going back in the UK i.e. it is now on Greenwich mean time. It was all working fine a few days ago so don't understand what's gone wrong - very annoying.

Anybody suggest a fix?

Not heard of the clocks being an issue, whenever I get this shutting down the launcher and restarting it usually works.

OK I've been experimenting. I have ED, the horizons pack and the Commander pack all installed from Steam.

What I was doing was launching Steam, selecting ED Horizons and running it and it would fire up the Oculus software with a white screen in the rift saying ED was loading and taking a long time to load etc. I would then be into the ED menu in my Rift.

What happens now when I do this is that the Rift stays in the Oculus VR hompage in the villa while my monitor is showing a small version of the ED main menu and opening screen. If I start the game - say a training mission then the Rift is still displaying the Oculus Villa and the game is only shown on my monitor.

If I try to launch the game manually from the Oculus homepage where Elite is shown as a game in my library (but not Horizons or the Commander pack) then it says it's initialising planets and worlds etc in the glasses and then I get the cannot authenticate message.

I'm thus stuck and not able to play the game in VR at this point.

Right I've managed to get it working by selecting in the Steam Menu 'Launch Elite Dangerous in VR mode' which is a right click option in Steam and it works perfectly. Does this automatically give me the horizons and commander packs though or does it mean I can only run the base game this way??

Grateful for any input.

The commander pack is paint jobs for a couple ships. You should be able to change them in the livery section of a station.

If Holo Me shows up yellow/orange, my default color, you can do Horizons. If it is red then you only get vanilla.
