I have been kicked off several times, and unable to log in as well.
With the right tech in place, I would have thought they would be able to cope with any uptick in demand with the click of a button. In fact, even without the click of a button.
Data only travels at a certain rate and no I'm not talking about between the servers and players. There's a bottleneck from Frontier (as the only ones with the data required to update the amazon servers), when a few servers have the update they come online and also start distributing the update files to other servers so there's less of a bottleneck.
When a minimum number are online they are available to us to play, the remaining servers are still updating, afaik there's several hours between the opening up to players and the last server updating to the newest version.
More servers isn't a solution as it just means there's more to distribute the update to. Huge companies like Rockstar/EA used to have a second set of servers they'd update with the first set running the earlier version and swap over at a flip of a switch, massively expensive and still tons of issues. Most do it on a phased rollout as above these days.
On top of the rollout issue you have an insane factor of increased load, not just the players coming around that aren't usually online to try the new stuff but also every man and his dog trying to download the update files. So you have uploads, downloads and more traffic all at once which is a pretty insane situation.
The only real solution to guarantee the servers are ready is to hold off on letting players in until more servers are online with the new update... Although the down-time may increase from say 9hrs to 15hrs. All guestimates here obviously since I don't have any insider knowledge but I think it's about right anyway.
Anyway, it's not really possible to do things faster than the bottleneck unfortunately as more servers etc are all on the wrong side of the bottleneck. They could get mega ultra super fast connections put in but I somehow doubt the British ISPs would do that for anything less than an astronomical price (pun intended), especially when updates are once/twice a year.
Edit: There's a good livestream somewhere with Dav Stott. I may find and snip out a few choice clips and save them for when the next update day comes around so I can post them everywhere
