People said oh they are everywhere! I've gone to Resource Extraction Sites, Hazardous ones, low ones. I've gone to Navigation Beacons. I'm on my way to a Conflict Zone just to see if I can find these mysterious focus crystals that are apparently "everywhere." Any other suggestions??

Have a look at the mission board. Combat oriented (massacre, assassination) missions offer these as a reward sometimes. Last time I checked, Ray Gateway in the Diaguandri system offered those for personal weapons acquisition missions (careful, those are illegal at said station), but you might need a big ship as most of these missions are for multi crew.
In any case you might get Exquisite Focus Crystals (the highest tier) as a reward which you can trade down to any crystal variant you want through a materials trader.

Try evac missions you get plenty there or you can max them out in an hour plus earn some serious credits doing the so this passenger missions.
Yes, as others have intimated. Go to a system where you have spent a lot of time over the yearas and are allied with all the factions. There you will find a fair variety of missions offering 1 to 5 exquisite focus crystals as a payment option. These can then be traded down to make large quantities of any other crystal type. 
Also, Exquisite Focus Crystals are a regular reward for passenger missions. I usually stock up on these at Robigo.
Which "focus crystals" in particular are you looking for?
