Cannot launch from planet surface - PS4

Hi,

Elite Dangerous on a Playstation 4 is marvellous. What isn't so good is not being able to lift off from a planet's surface.

I landed on one for the first time last night, had a drive around in an SRV, go back into my ship, and there I still am. An instruction pops up tellilng me how to lift off, i.e. use what looks like the PS4's right joystick button, the same as for taking off from any space station or planetary base's landing pad, something I've done countless times before.

But, no matter what I try to do with the right joystick, or anything else, my ship will not budge. What on Earth could I be doing wrong? How can it be so difficult to do? is it a bug??? if so, how do I get round it?

Many thanks in advance.

all you do is thrust up, just, you need to hold the key and it will take some time(couple seconds) - a circular display on the HUD will show state and after this !!! thrusters will start

There used to be a bug on PC where your thrusters would be powered off and taking off wouldn't start them. See if you can enable them on the modules tab of the right side panel.

Edit: Also, on PC you take off by holding whatever the binding is for thrust up. Are you sure you're using the right one? I have no idea what it is on a PS4 controller.

Hmm strange. I honestly have no clue, have the drives been engaged? If so and you still cant get off the ground id file a bug report.

It might be possible that your ships thrusters arnt powerful enough to get your ship off the surface of a high g planet . I landed on a 4g planet with my anaconda(rather harshly) and i only have 5d drives to save weight, my ship had hard times keeping altitude.

I believe you can uninstall horizond and re load the game and you will spawn in orbit. Then re install it.

Thrusters now auto shutdown once landed, they cannot be manually turned on. Devs implemented that change a while back. Previously you could Manually shut down thrusters to prevent the ship from auto Launching when the SRV was 2km+ from the ship.

@op- Hold whatever you have assigned to vertical thrust, doesn’t get anymore complicated then that, you will see a HUD animation of the engines spooling up.

@Yolo, thruster class and rating makes zero difference to launch performance, doesn’t matter how high the gravity is. Only difference is max speed achieved during the climb out.

Use EST - Emergency Space Teleport.

When launching the game choose non-Horizon version. Upon loading the game you should be instantly put in orbit, sitting comfortably in your ship. You can do it, right - I'm on PC so it's a matter of choosing a version.

Not sure you can do that on the playstation.

No - any ship with any installable thrusters can take off any landable planet. There’s an artificial/magic boost added to the thrusters so that you can’t get into a situation where you can’t take off. But after the take off on a high-G planet you need to be carefull if you have weak thrusters, but it’s not like you can’t leave the planet - as long as you don’t make a mistake.

(Didn’t see your comment, 777Driver - but I added a bit of info.)

Hi All,

I've resolved the problem with take off. It was down to the mapping of the controls. When I first started playing Elite earlier this year I re-mapped the left and right joystick, swapping over their functionality, as I found it easier to work with it that way. What i didn't know was that this removed the ascend and descend functions from the right joystick; when I docked my SRV after its first ever excursion onto a planet and the display popped up with the helpful suggestion of using the right joystick to lift off, it wouldn't work because it couldn't.

It could perhaps have suggested that I needed to re-map the up and down / ascend and descend function to something, but it didn't. So I have re-mapped the controller and I am no longer lost in space.

Thanks to everyone who kindly took the time to suggest a way out of this. Unfortunately the PS4 version does not have an option to go in without the Horizons add on which would allow my session to re-spawn in orbit. However, most replies seemed to suggest that the lift off function really should work, and this inspired me to look at this again. And then I looked into the controller mapping and saw that nothing at all was assigned to the right controller joystick, because of my customised changes. So I simply set the controller to default, and lift off finally worked!

So, back to the future. Thanks.
