Cannot scan some planets with discovery scanner

As the title says: I have having an issue where I can find some planets and fly right up to them but the discovery scanner will not pick them up. They are never discovered, so I can't scan them; they don't show up in my HUD. Was there a change recently that made it so some astronomical bodies can't be scanned with the basic scanner? I have a hard time believing I am over 500 Ls away when the planet is taking up all of my screen.

Sometimes the scanner says it picked up so many objects but don't show them, try using the scanner a second time, they should then appear.

I sometime have this issue, I normally do an advanced scan of the system again re-discover the bodies and then the missing planets then appear

Are these planets in civilized space?

There are planets that were counted as discovered before the first player logged on in Gamma. These are "famous" systems as it were, everyone knows what is there. Those planets and suns can never get a first discovered tag.

That isn't their problem...they are honking the space horn but the planet just in front of them is not showing up as a targetable object when it should.

OP, does the planet show up in the Navigation menu or in the System Map?

No, it does not. Also, I flew out to the farthest out star in the system and that isn't being discovered for me either. I posted an image of me scanning the planet down and not having it be discovered; it's apparently waiting on a moderator's approval.

My friend thinks it had something to do with us being in a wing together. Normally I would nav-lock him and follow him into the next system and he would be scanning it with an advanced discovery scanner while I was coming in. We only recently noticed that if he waits for me then I get all the locations of planets when he finishes the scan. Maybe him scanning while I am jumping in system is breaking discovered planets.

You are in a populated system, so as Agony_Aunt says, it is most probably a system that is already in your navigation computer and as such is already "discovered". That would also explain why you get that message "no new astronomical object discovered".

If a planet has not been scanned by you and is discover-able, it will have the tag "Unexplored" on it in your reticle. If a planet is already named in your target reticle then you cannot scan it. If the planet shows no information at all in the reticle then you need to run another pass with your Discovery Scanner.

The Basic Discovery Scanner has limited range. So if you do a scan at the main star in a system when you jump in, it will only find celestial bodies within a limited range of that point. So if you fly further out from the star, you will probably need to do another scan to uncover more. The Intermediate scanner has a bigger range and the Advanced scanner pretty much uncovers everything in the entire system. Also server lag can affect the scans at the moment, so you may find you need to give it another pass or two before it properly fills in all the information in your nav window. Also planetary scans can often end up having to repeat once or twice too.

Doing a blanket scan with one of the Discovery Scanners will net you a basic payout for all the planets and bodies it has found. Scanning the bodies after that with only a Discovery Scanner equipped to fill in the "Unexplored" tags with data will not net you more money. You will only get extra money for scanning the bodies if you also have a Surface Scanner equipped, which will give you additional data on the planets as well as extra income. The smaller the celestial body, the closer you have to get to it before it can be scanned. Also the closer you are the faster a scan will complete. Asteroid/Debris fields do not pay any money at all for being scanned, so only bother with them if you are a completionist. Also Ice Planets are often so numerous and pay so little that it's often better not to bother with them, unless you really must scan every last planet in a system.

Use this as a guide to give you an idea as to how much your scans will be worth. http://lavewiki.com/_media/lw01dg5.jpg Note, undiscovered scans give a 50% bonus. You don't really need to get more than about 300-400ly out from the core before you'll start finding loads of undiscovered systems, as long as you don't fly out towards one of the main tourist destinations.

If it was already explored, I would still be able to target planets and they would be in the nav computer. This definitely seems to be a bug. I just wanted to verify that this wasn't some mechanic that I was not already aware of that was added in a recent patch. I will be reporting it once I find out where to put the bug report.

His screenshot is of the system Friggirawi. Like many populated fringe systems, that one is classed as unexplored, so is ripe for scanning.
He's fired the disco scanner but is getting no objects found despite there being a planet right there; and the only astro object on the radar is the primary star, which would have been picked up on jump in.

Seems to be a bug. Either that or the servers are being stupid again. I had to fire the disco six times in one system a couple of evenings back to finally get the objects to pick up.
