Cannot Sell Unused Mission Items At Bartender

You can use them for suit upgrades, even when the mission is active....

I think I had issues identifying the one I wanted to put in the carrier when I tried to clean mine.

Yes, one easy and fast way to get power regulators is to accept power up missions and cancel them. You get to keep the power regulator while getting fined 100.000 credits. But even if they are mission items you can use them for engineering. But if you do end up with some of the basically useless materials due to a failed mission you can't sell it until you've managed to remove the mission item status of it, personally I just transfer it to the carrier and back, and then sell it to some bartender to get rid of the clutter in the inventory.

So this means you can just accept missions, cancel them and swap them to and fro from carrier. How much are these items worth?
It's a pretty dumb way to do it. You could abandon the mission and be fined 100,000 for a single power regulator, or you can take an AX reactivation mission and complete it to get a reward of 5 power regulators and ~10M.

On an aside, it's a mechanic that underpins an exploit which is much more profitable... apparently someone from FD support said that was all good and right, but I suspect a misunderstanding.

sorry for newbie question but how do i know which of these types of 'bartender sellable' mission reward items i should be selling as "junk" and which of them i should be saving for later? ( re: Engineering )
There are lists online, even apps that overlay the game to tell you what things are worth.
Personally I grab everything not nailed down.
Assets can be condensed so are rarely sold.
Goods; Power regulators, suit and weapon schematics, ionised gas and compressed liquified gas are worth keeping. All others generally get sold.
Data; Manufacturing Instructions are always needed, beyond that there's loads of types, if you figure out which mods you might be considering you should be able to work out which data you want to keep, though data is usually sparse enough to hold on to for considerable periods before storage becomes an issue.

you can look up engineers and their unlocks/recipes online and make a list
or
as many (pc) cmdrs highly recommend: get familiar with the mat helper, where amongst many other features you can set up a popup overlay that will show you which mats to not/get.
it really has everything you need.

Just an addendum: bartenders/pioneer in communist/anarchist stations buy and sell items not otherwise posssible.
(helps to think of them as fences)

Yup, I don't have any client addons so if one of my Ody bins is getting full I manually refer to Inara - either the list above, or the inventory/ship's locker for a list of just the items you currently carry. Anything in grey is an item which Inara thinks has no known use, so can be safely sold. This may change as the game continues to be developed of course - I hear Cmdrs often hang on to the grey building/vehicle schematics just in case...

There are a few white items that can be sold too, if they are just used for an engineer unlock which you have already done. But rather than selling to a barkeeper those may fetch good prices to other Cmdrs depending on rarity - may be worth hanging on to and checking for carriers that are buying (or selling on your own FC if you have one).

one more thing came to my mind in regards to ody mats shopping.
different mats have different trade value at the bartender.
look up mats with the highest value from each category and prioritise grabbing those / recycle the unwanted, low value ones into the high value ones. will save you some space and create a vault of value that you will be able to trade down for the more desired ones when you are going after particular blueprint...

Note that only pertains to roughly 20% of the Ody mats (assets). The rest are only sellable or usable (50% of all mats are only sellable).
