Canopy Damage Percentage

Just had a major c**k-up by dropping out of SC by accident playing around with buttons.

Dropped from about 91% hull to 82%. However the scary announcement was the canopy compromised warning.

So sitting about 18000 Ly from home and bit peaved at my stupidity.
.

Anyway, I take it the canopy is separate from the hull percentage and I should head home carefully.

Who says that exploring in Elite isn't exciting. Have had broken canopy before in combat but not out in the sticks, lol
.
Just checked and I am just over 20,000ly from home. So have at least a two week scary ride to go.

Good luck commander for your return journey....................."May the force be with you."

"Canopy compromised" is just first warning, next will be "canopy 50%", then "canopy critical", and only then canopy breach. And chances that next random heat damage will hit your canopy again are low.

Didn't you bring any tape?

I usually carry a few rolls of fiberglass tape. Just give it a thump with your fist and if it holds, tape it up and carry on.

Good luck, hope you make it back. Were you by any chance trying to repair thrusters while in SC? We've all done that, or variations thereof... just put it down to experience for the next time.

Wait a minute while I give it a test with my boot.
.

Was first warning. So is it likely just to give out or will I get another warning. Or can it go to 25% on first warning.

As long as you don't ram anything you should be fine :p

Well I am going to slowly make my way home. But needed this trip to get my Elite status and an Anaconda.
.
Going to keep on scanning as many Neutron stars as I can whilst heading back.
.
If it all goes bang, then so be it. Its all about living dangerous is it not.

Hell yeah. +1 rep! :D

Stay safe and fly safe.

I bound the KeyPad Enter key to '0% thrust' and whenever Doris starts her countdown, I tapped the enter key twice. It became a habit that saved me heading home early when I binned my asp into a moon and cracked my canopy after 3000ly when heading to the core. Continued there and back with no further damage.

That key bind saved me from reading whist jumping and going smack head first into a bright shiny thing...

Still out and exploring strong. Hull down to 75% after a couple of silly mistakes.
.
Managed to scan exactly 1000 Neutron stars and over 3000 systems to date. Getting the urge to come home, but still 14000 Ly out. Was wanting to try and get Elite status from this trip but going stir crazy at times.
.
Just scanned an earth-like planet this morning that I thought I would share. Goes to show that the duct tape trick seems to work.

Awesome pic. I know what you mean about 'stir crazy' am near the core and thinking about the long journey home. Music and Audio books are keeping me sane, did 2000LY listening to this last night -

I turned back about 18Kly out with the old compromised canopy. Hull down to 76% due to silly mistakes and being ambushed by binary red dwarf stars. Still 5Kly to go ...

You should make a good amount of progression from that data. Well done! (Assuming/hoping you get back safely)

Edit: and check out the Lonely Explorers friends thread

Nice pic :D

Same as OP I got the first canopy message, but I chickened out and came back 18000LY to make sure I log in my first long expedition of 45000LY :)
1 system before my dock i was ambushed by an NPC wing and nearly died(no shields, submition somehow didn't work), but I made it and managed 65M Cr :D

I got too close to a neutron star last night, spent 10 minutes on the map looking for interesting phenomena etc and trying to plot routes to them, while in close proximity in SC to said neutron star, throttle set to zero though.
Closed the map down, eased the throttle up slightly and started to turn away, next thing "dropping too close"
Awwoooga awooga, crunch creak "canopy compromised".
Its not many cracks but its enough to give me some pause, especially when Im over 2000ly from anywhere to repair.
Hull is down to 88% too, after my "I wonder what will happen if I turn off my thrusters while in SC, oh that!!!"
And my "Im going to clean my joystick while looking at the modules panel, oh look I clicked the button and turned off my FSD while Im in SC" moment.
Still onwards and outwards, to the rim and back or damned!

Was heading home slowly using Neutron stars for every jump back and got to 10000ly from base. Another reason I was heading home was for the new 1.3 update, but looks like it will not affect me for another 2-3 weeks.
.
Guess it will not be released next week and also the pre-backers will get to try it first for a week before general release. So decided to risk all again and head back in to the void. Map below shows my route so far.
.
Ship at 75% hull damage. First canopy warning from earlier. Don't have any heat-sinks left and only 2600ish left in my last auto repair module. Power plant at 79%

Scary moment from yesterday before I finished up for the evening.

Well that's my time up in the great unknown. Had one too many 'OOOOpppss' moments.
.
Canopy on its last legs and duck tape aint going to cut it much longer. Probably be ok for a bit longer but have too much data and been pushing my luck as it is.
.
Have set a course for home.

I'm cracked up quite a bit as well, haven't heard the 50% warning (just hope I haven't missed it)
