I have 2 friends who recently bought the game so we were gonna play together. When I search their name up in the social tab, they don't show up and when they search me up they can send a friend request but I don't receive one. It also says when they search me up that I haven't been active for 3 months. I've verified game data and tried playing in both odyssey and horizons but nothing is working. Is there anything else I could try?

how you manage to search them up in the in game social tab when the game don't work is a bit of a mystery to me ...……..

are you sure you and your friends are using the same game versions? Meaning all of you are in either Odyssey, Horizons 4.0 or Legacy Horizons? Also, despite both being on the 4.0 client, Odyssey and Horizons 4.0 players cannot instance together.
Them not being able to find you in social makes me suspect one of you is in Legacy and the other in Live.

Yes, I concur with @Helmut Grokenberger , it sounds like your friends are in legacy and you are in live, 3 months ago coincides with the break between Legacy Horizons and Live v4.0...
Also, what I can offer: I am going to be in Odyssey in a few minutes (for about two hours or so), if you have Odyssey and want to test it, shoot me a friend request.
Yup we realised a few hours ago he was playing on legacy and his download for the newer horizons just finished
Something has recently (today) gone wrong with the social search function, it's causing yellow adder errors. You can still add people as friends if you can manage to instance with them so they appear in your recent contacts.
