can't be a pirate

just started playing do trading runs, but can you really be a pirate or bounty hunter in the sindwinder? if so you cant do interdiction like pirates so how could you in anycase? is the point without cargo scoop anyway? is everyone just trading?

At the start everyone just trading, and when money is enough to do something, start to look around.

You should be able to do either in a Sidewinder someday, but for now we're lacking the modules for interdiction and other features.

Check this beauty

Right now as of Beta 1 I am doing trading, I was going to do some combat, but when outfitting my Eagle I hit a bit of a snag (adding two more C2 pulse lasers reduced its range a lot).

So, now I'm in a Hauler.

so really for now we are happy traders.

Well ... no.

At the start you will be as you're right - in a sidewinder it's quite difficult to defend yourself let alone be a pirate. However, work your way up to an Eagle or Cobra and things change. Commander Sam on his YouTube channel put up an excellent video of him becoming bored of trading and took a tricked out Cobra pirate hunting instead ... looked fun!

Beta 1.03 has changed things - for the first time we can see other players in supercruise but can't do anything about it - I expect in an up and coming build we will see NPCs in supercuise too and be able to pull ships out into normal space.

Bounty hunting is more viable than piracy right now due to the lack of interdiction mechanics. But it *is* still doable, even in a sidewinder. It won't make money as fast as trading though, which is something which still needs balancing. The mission system will cover some of this discrepancy though, as it expands.

Trading will be balanced sure enough ... I personally feel things are tuned at the moment to help players make money to allow them to explore and test. (Think of say an XP boost in games during Alpha/Beta process) Come release FD would reverse this tuning and let the game be as it should. (For example - the ship prices to me seem extraordinarily cheap! The Devs wanting you to become attached to them is hard to do when an eagle is only 16K ;))

I've come across some juicy Lakon 6s in Unidentified Signal Sources.....easy picking in a Sidewinder :) Leave such a nice trail of cargo as they boost away

Presumably we'll need to see NPCs in super cruise for piracy to really work. It would be a brutal (and possibly very funny) if we got interdiction and the only people to test it on were fellow pilots.

I don't know if the transponder discussion is still going but the super cruise dynamic is important for that. I'm sure it was in the designs but I didn't picture it like this before Beta.

Until they implement formal careers and player interdictions, they still haven't implemented piracy.

The "It's too hard to be a pirate! :(" discussions have been around since the premium beta or earlier, and the response has always been the same: "Yes it will happen. No it hasn't happened yet. It's nowhere near finished yet, in fact it's not even a game yet, it's a beta test. Be patient."

Sure, you CAN pirate NPC and other players yet:

choose a anarchy system, "park" your pirate ship near the station (but not inside the no firing zone of course :) ) and then scan and attack some merchant vessels (i.e. hauler).
When using the cargo scanner, they abort their station landing and do some weidr flying maneuvres. you can relieve them of cargo with some laser fire.

You can also pirate some ships in the unindentified signal sources in EVERY system. Beware the bounty in non-anarchy systems, however.

with Both methods you can make some nice profit (depending on cargo --> gold, tech-items i.e. ate very nice :) )und have fun

I'm pretty sure I read a player write that you can interdict other ships, but you have to close to within 200m of them in SC and then your Frameshift drives cancel each other out and you're both thrown out of SC.

I'm making a good living pirating pirates at the moment. Npcs exclusively as no player would be stupid enough to have a bounty in a hauler or type 6 would they? :)
