I've only just started on the game and am playing the tutorials. I've reached the mining tutorial and have a hit a problem. I'm told to deploy hardpoints, which results in mining lasers being deployed. Next, I'm told to disable shields, done. Next I'm told to fire at a rock, but a msg pops up saying "wrong cockpitmode, press M to change". I press M and nothing happens. I've looked at options/controls and M is assigned to change cockpit, so why isn't it working?

Ok. I did get it to work, but I'm not sure how. Either you have to move closer to the asteroid, or you have to wait until the lady stops talking before the tutorial will allow it to happen. I'll keep experimenting.
Tbh I imagine yes, waiting for the tutorial lady to finish will help.
I have found that you have to approach the asteroid until blue text appears in your view telling you to hit [M] to switch modes. Then the M key works and I can fire. There is definitely a pattern in the tuts that some functions are disabled until the voice quits or a text appears. This makes perfect sense but sometimes I can miss a little detail in the narration like "approach the asteroid". (Thanks, Bottom Hat, for your response.)
