Newcomer / Intro Can't create a Commander

When I get to the Create New Player screen I can't type in the text box. The system seems to be stuck in navigation mode with W, A, S and D navigating me around the text box and Exit and OK buttons. How do I switch modes or stop this happening?

silly answer I know, but I have you tried hitting "esc" and or clicking with the mouse?

Not silly, but yes I have. Esc just activates Exit and the mouse isn't working at all in that screen. There's no mouse pointer anywhere either. I'm not sure whether there should be mouse control available or not in that screen actually.

I m not at my game now so the extent of my help is limited... as far as i know the mouse should work in all the game menus. Maybe that is something you can explore? Try changing mouse?

Can you change controller and retry? (or you cant even access that menu yet?)

Such a weird bug.

The mouse works absolutely fine for everything else and has done for years. I haven't reached any menus to do with controllers yet.

One thought I have just had: is there any way to run Elite in Windowed mode? In the past I've had a couple of games which acted up in full screen but worked fine when run in a Window. Also wondering whether it's worth trying reinstalling.

For everybody's info I'm running on Windows 7 btw.

Have you tried exiting shutting the launcher and restarting? something thereisnt right, I dont think i even used WASD on that screen, just mouse clicked into box and typed name. Another thing you could try is the clear save option, just in case something is corrupted there

The launcher has been closed and opened multiple times. It's currently running Elite 1.03. Where is the clear save option? The only option menu I've seen is in the launcher itself and that just has Select Language.
