Can't figure out how to play with friends

Real sorry if this is covered. I did a quick scan and couldn't find any answers... So:

My friend and I are having some issues trying to appear in the same place. We want to travel around together, but no matter when or how we load, grouped or not, we can’t see each other.

I open my Comms menu, and see Backer #etc.etc. at the very bottom under “Friends:” But I cannot interact with him. Clicking on his name doesn’t bring up a menu like the local contacts do (text chat, open voice chat, block, report, etc.)

Is the only option to do this is privately? Such as, Main Menu: Online > Private game?

It must be a bug with the matchmaking.

Me and a friend did coop last night. We used the Private Group function and it worked fairly well. Every once in a while there would be some sort of weird de-sync where he would totally just disappear, but hopping into supercruise and coming back in usually resolved that.

We did some piracy together and general faffin' about... nothing major. Until there are things like credit trade and alliances, doing coop missions is going to be a bit difficult... but we can still just both accept the same missions and go at it.
