Can't find a black box.

hello,

I took a mission to go find a black box in HE BO and i've been looking at unidentified signals, so far i only found enemy npc's and some police convoys, am i doing something wrong?

Nope. All good. Keep searching. ;) Lots of USS'es out there. You will find it if you keep looking. Its a small black box in deep space so its not always easy. Good luck mate.

Ah thank you very much, it's a bit worrying because i'm in an unarmed Lakon 6 and i'm a little out of my depth, i don't usually take these missions, i'm just a trader but i need rep with an important Alliance faction. NPC pirates keep asking me the equivalent of 'what has it got in it's pocketses?!' before i shoot off back into supercruise, it's scary :)

Just do the same over and over again and eventually you will find it or get tired before.. You are doing it right

Hehe you are most welcome. :) I wish you could group up already. Then i could have jumped in and have your back while you search the USS'es. In "Wings" expansion i hope we can do that.

hehe cheers :) i found it, i was able to take the box back without worrying about the police because the destination was a small station. But how would i have gotten the box past security at a larger station?

The two commonly accepted modes are:

1) Stealth mode. Either with silent running or without. Without carries a greater chance of being spotted due to higher heat signature and you have to turn off modules and go in with flight assist off until the last moment for best chances. Also, if the SA vessels are close enough, they will see you regardless. Also helps to have a ship configured with good power supply and low power consumption in general.

2) Go in full blast. Works best with faster ships. Just line yourself up, head towards station at full speed from about 8Km out. When close, hit boost and keep boosting until through the letterbox. Its generally successful because even if a scan starts you can be through the entrance before they can finish. However, if you are in a small ship and there is something bigger coming out.... BOOM. So its definitely risky.

And there is something i've noticed... its not perfect, but hugging the side of the station as you fly around seems to block you from their line of sight if you are lucky. You can get around to the entrance without them spotting you, and then just slip in. Suspect its not a good method to rely on though.

Sory for my ignorance but i thought stealth mode and silent running were one and the same thing, there is a mode other than silent running that decreases your heat signature?

Stealth mode covers a couple of different styles.

Silent running ensures you don't emit heat, but it also increases internal temperature quickly which is risky. You want to turn off all non-essential power usage of course to reduce this.

The alternative is, with a good power plant, strip your systems down so that when running at full power you are at as low as possible use. Then, when about to dock, turn off everything you can. Life support, shields, etc. Well, turn off everything except life support and wait until you cool, then turn it off. Then boost towards the station and turn off thrusters with flight assist off. If you get it 100% right, you will glide right in without detection. More likely, you will need a course correction, so turn on thrusters as you are close and make those adjustments.

Its riskier than using silent running due to the trickiness of docking, and generally speaking, your heat signature is going to be higher, therefore increasing the chance of detection. But it is a viable alternative and you don't have to worry about overheating.

Keep searching, I took a "bring 3 Toxic Waste" mission yesterday with I think 19 hours to complete, I found them just 2 hours before the time run off and 50+ USS later ( with sleep inbetween ) while when I dont need Toxic Waste I stumble over it constantly.
