Newcomer / Intro Can't find black box. Frustrated!

Agreed to do a retrieve black box mission in Alrai Sector JH-V B2-6,which has no docks nor stations. It is just deep space and 3 stars but I could not find the other two unexplored starrs.

Anyway, I've spent 30 minutes or so looking for USS to no avail. If only the is a north - south, East and West bearing.

Was convinced that this was a futile effort. Any tips on a better search? I know we should be looking nearer to the star

I have been very successful in finding USS's in these systems, I have found black boxes, rare art, rebel transmissions and the such, one method is to leave the system and come back, USS are usually close to the orbit lines, Nav beacons, and stars, usually less than 300 ls from the main star. also, look at your nav screen every so often, you will see USS on the list but not on your HUD.

All good advice.

Also double-check you are in the right system, all these similarities in the names can be confusing (caught me-out one too many times!).

Basically cruise around the main star at a fair speed (20-30ly). I head-out from the star for a good distance, then back towards it but above/below, then the same but to the left/right, and so-on. Sometimes follow the orbit lines.

Don't worry about the other two stars, concentrate your search around the main one (where you drop into the system).

Fly inside the orbital plane, I have the best luck finding USS inside this.
They also appear to spawn more frequently around astronomical objects and in straight lines between them, less so in deep space but larger systems may have them dispersed a little more freely.

When i'm looking i'll have my LEFT UI-Navigation pane open and scroll to the top (closest items at top). Just use that as a trawling net and once one pops up (towards top of list) just lock it in.

Not wishing to argue, but I have never seen any evidence that your location within a system has any bearing on USS spawn rate, with the possible exception of being close enough to an object to be within its sphere of influence (it is mentioned in your targeting info box, or possibly the blue marker on your Navigation tab) - Deep Space is Deep Space, and being a games designer myself, I am pretty good at spotting "useful" code (and therefore likely to be there) and "faff" code (too time consuming to be worthwhile including). I would highly doubt that your orientation to the orbital plane or anything similarly arbitrary to anything but the pattern recognition part of the human consciousness would be coded.

Empty Systems (those without Nav Points) do spawn less USS than others - I think that is a well known fact
USSs are distributed in time, not in space, so travelling about does not help (except releave boredom). If you want to find USS - Engines to 0% (still travel at 30 or so somethings) is by far the quickest way to churn through them. They will appear pretty much in front of you and be immediately available to target and exit FSD, so there is 0 travel time. This easiest to monitor in your Navigation tab as others have said.

When doing a "fetch X from Y mission", despite the mission brief, it does not matter where you collect X from. If you are in Y, the random USS generator will be weighted in favour of your mission objectives, but if it is an empty system, you may well be better off hunting elsewhere with more USS but a lower chance of each one being the sort you are after.

I always turn around when entering the system, to have the star in my back. As soon as I'm outside "Proximity" range, I throttle to zero and turn around to face the star.
Cruise at 30 m/s, and USS start popping up slowly.

Never been in a system more than 15 minutes on average before I found the USS I needed, be it Black Box, Prototype Tech, Ancient Artifact, what have you.

I guess you're meant to turn around to face the star you'd drop/arrive in at.
Then look at your Contact screen and wait for USS to pop out, then lock it in? If so, will try that and see if success rates in finding it improves

Set Engines to 0% but still in super cruise mode? Or, come out of FSD?

USS can spawn anywhere, your proximity to various lanes, stations, stars etc is simply a coincidence, just keep flying around and they will show up. I flew at full sc for two hours as an experiment and they were still spawning.

You're most likely right, but I've had more luck going towards the star than away.
It's probably all in my head, but if it works it works right? ;)

Same here!!
I don't linger in a system too long before one pops up for me..
