Newcomer / Intro Cant find Datamined Wake Exceptions

Hey all:
I'm trying to do some engineer upgrades and I am missing datamined wake exceptions. I've researched the web and watched a bunch of youtube tutorials, which instruct me to find a famine system and then scan the T-9's and the incoming/outgoing ships. Problem is, I can't find any famine systems to do this. I've tried innara, eddbio, etc and they show systems, but none end up being famine, they're all just "lockdown". I've also watched some youtube tutorials on how to search for famine systems in the "state" area of the galaxy map.... however, I can't seem to find the "state" area of the galaxy map, that the video's assume is easy to locate. I've tried finding vid's to show me how to locate the state area, and they all say do this, this, this and there it is, but it isn't there when I do that. It's like my settings are off, or i dunno.. but I cant figure it out. I know it SHOULD be there, but obviously I am missing something, so need a remedial lesson lol. I've been researching and trying for about 5-6 hours now and I'm just stumped.

So... how can I either find famine systems to scan ships or what other ways can i get datamined wake exceptions please?

i usually just scan random fsd wakes and see what i get. i dont remember where i got most of the datamined wake exceptions though, sorry

Famine isn't as common a state as it used to be unfortunately.

But if getting any material/data is being a pain, just trade for it at a material/data trader. Yeah, you lose some stuff on the trade, but its better than banging your head.

Datamined Wake Exceptions are classified as very rare. According to Inara, you'll find them in Encoded emissions USS sites...

...as well as high wake scanning in the indicated places. No indication of a famine state.

I can't remember where I got mine, but it must have been in USS sites because I never got myself a wake scanner. I spent much of my time early in my playing days stopping at all the USS sites I found. I gathered an awful lot of stuff over time.

You can trade for these too, as mentioned above. It's possible that the famine state must be on the controlling faction, but I'm not certain of that. (If true, it certainly makes it that much more rare!)

Forgive me if you've already tried the following on EDDB to find Famine systems...

Good luck...

I second the wake scanner thing. Outside a busy station you will fill up with data very fast. And can always trade the other data to get datamined wake exceptions too.

The videos are correct - open the Galmap and do the selections marked with 1,2, 3, and 4 ...

Equip a wake scanner. Patrol just outside a busy station and scan wakes.

Here are 3 good places among many many others

This is exactly what I do. And trade for them - Jamesons crashed site offers another G5 to make trading a bit easier.

If you go the "scanning wakes route", my advice would be to hit a tourist beacon or a nav beacon instead of a station, as the first two don't mind you deploying your hardpoints to actually do the scan. Yes, you can fly just far enough from the station for it to be allowed, but then you'll be chasing wakes all over the shop to get them in range of your scanner. Also, if you can and you have the unlock/mats to do it, get a fast scan engi on that wake scanner unless you want to go completely nuts waiting for it.

The station doesn't do anything if you have hardpoints deployed, yes they moan at you when you do deploy them but from then on in they say no more unless you stray outside the NFZ so they moan again when you come back inside it. There is no penalty, no fine, no security firing on you - nothing. So don't worry about it and there is a darn sight less chasing-down wakes at a station rather than the well-spread-out ones you find at Nav beacons for example.

Find an open Carrier (or your own if you've got one) in a high populated system and scan the wakes from there. That's how I get mine these days. If you're worried about Ganking or whatever then just do it in Solo. ;)

Learned something new again. Thanks, Para! :)

As others said, equip a wake scanner and scan some wakes as you're bound to find some this way. I do it around my fleet carrier right after take off when I'm running short of data.

Thanks for all the advice. I need to do more research on Jamesons. I've heard of it, but not sure what results from there. On my list of places to visit. Maybe it's like Dav's Hope is for materials, Jamesons is for data?

Anyhoo.... I took the advice, got a wake scanner (20 seconds is a LOOOOOONG time, lol).. And just scanned wakes for about an hour and got what I needed. I guess the famine system info is outdated, lucky for me.

Fly safe Commanders and thanks for the help!

I consider it prudent when doing this in an armed ship to arrange things so the Wake Scanner is in a separate fire group so I do not cause an incident if I catch the wrong trigger.

I put the Wake Scanner on trigger two where I have an alternative control bound that I can lock down to keep the scanner permanently on.

Hi aioun,
Your time in this case may be better spent getting access to Tiana Fortune and engineering the Frame shift wake scanner to fast scan, in some cases long range works better.

Or Juri Ishmaak, Bill Turner or Lori Jameson for level 3, this cuts the time in half.

Chelomey Orbital, Cubeo.

Go there in open on a busy day.

Wait for the AI to bug out around the capital ship dock and the navy ships to start attacking the station.

Watch the navy ships start jumping out and new ones replace them.

Scan wakes at your leisure.
