Can't find the Top 5 Largest stars

Note: By size I mean radius. Not to be confused with MASS :)

OK let me start by letting you know what I have found, but i'm not giving out names apart from the obvious one at number 8. If you are interested then it won't take you long to discover their names but please don't spoil them here.

Too much is gifted on a plate in the forums IMHO :)

So this is where I am at...

1. No Spoiler - Missing - Not Found
2. No Spoiler - Missing - Not Found
3. No Spoiler - Missing - Not Found
4. No Spoiler - Missing - Not Found
5. No Spoiler - Missing - Not Found
6. No Spoiler - In Game but less than 10% of the size it should be
7. No Spoiler - In Game but less than 10% of the size it should be
8. VY Canis Majoris - Well known - In game and impressive

So I have probably spent about 10 hours in the galaxy map looking for the top 5 monsters, with no luck.

Has anyone found them?

I was a quite disappointed with 6 & 7, I guess at some point they will be corrected and when they are I will certainly go back for a look :)

I've given up looking for now, as I have a feeling they are not in the game 'yet' don't know how they could get missed but... :(

Anyone else had any luck?

Thanks in advance

I'd say there's 3 aspects here:

1) ED uses certain names which might not match the names given on wikipedia (I know I had to search for 3-4 alternates for some large stars and WR stars also)
2) If you think the data we currently have is 100% accurate ... look up some fun data on real world 'Methuselah' star:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/science/hd140283.html
3) If you really want to get into bad data for ED ... we'd have to mention the many >18k mil year old stars .. slightly older than the 13.7k mil years +/- 0.04 estimate for the start of the universe.

I am curious why you placed VY CANIS MAJORIS at 8th, when it is the biggest star in the galaxy according to astronomers.

All the "cool stories" present this, but they have adjusted it towards 1200 times solar radius and probably don't agree on that either, while other stars are believed to be bigger. Some of them aren't in our galaxy though, so no wonder we aren't finding them :)

Sorry I'l clarify, the stars I'm referring to are all in our Galaxy, but possibly not in ED galaxy 'yet'

As for size, yes I am referring to radius not mass. :) - Thanks for clarifying Dave :)

Looking through wikipedias list I assume that they're missing due to them not being in any of the major star catalogues that elite has used.
Hipparcos, Henry draper and Gliese seem to the three main ones that I've found in game.

Yep, I did exactly the same thing you did Nutter, went to wikipedia, travelled to the closest one and was quite disappointed ... Most of them aren't even large stars :(

2MASS has defo been used in the game galaxy though...:S

I was dissapointed that neither AR Cassiopeiae (AR Cas in game) or Nu Scorpii (Jabbah in game), the only two "known" septuple star systems, appeared as septuple when I visited them. These where on my explorer "must see"-list.

I've been trying to hunt down W1-26 for ages with various different names and even trying to hunt down other Westerlund 1 cluster objects but no joy.

It's distance is a bit vague so perhaps that's why it's not in the game. I was going to try and convert the celestial coordinates to galactic and head out in that direction to see if they've added them but with random names. But I haven't had a chance to try and work out how to do the conversion.

I guess you did try the different star catalog designations in your search?

Sometimes something is mixed up in the game. E.g. black hole Cygnus X-1 is on the map under the HDE catalog number, but with HD name, and at the wrong position (in a distance in ly that should be parsecs). It's Star companion is at the correct position, but under the HDE catalog entry, missing the black hole.
