Can't get many games working with Oculus Rift

Hi guys, I'm new to the oculus rift I got one yesterday. I have done a lot of research on it and I understand that it can be a lot of faffing about getting games to work. I have a handful of games that I can get to work but theirs so many that won't. I've managed to get time machine vr, I expect you to die, dreadhalls (although a black screen flickers every 5 seconds or so) and a few others to work. I've read to put it to extended display mode or something? But with the latest 0.8.0 beta their is no option for this, I tried to install an earlier version 0.4.0 I think, but it wouldn't recognise the rift (DK2) although I did see the extended display mode. My graphics card is Nvidia GTX 760. Thanks

Im on a 980GTX and i couldnt get "i expect you to die" working either.

You could have a look at this

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3pxw5n/oculus_runtime_switcher_v301/

Its a runtime switcher. Various things are changed/removed between runtime 0.5 and 0.8 etc and some demos only work/are updated to work with certain oculus runtimes.

Most of the demos i have downloaded from oculus share have worked with runtime 0.5.0.1 and im on win7

Only a few of them worked in direct mode so im well used to just setting the dk2 up in extended mode.

Runtime 0.7 and above removed extended mode and broke support for previous versions. You can install earlier versions such as 0.5 for ED. They will work but the error messages will persist.

Cockpit games are best for the dk2 in my view. You could try DCS for flight simulation or euro truck simulator if you like a laid back driving sim. Both work well with runtime 0.8. Elite betas also works with 0.8 of you install steamVR.

As other have said, right now we still need to use different runtimes for different demos. Developers have used different versions when they made the demos, and many havnt bothered to update to newer ones.
But you should never have to go older than 0.5 for sure. 0.5 is also where ED have work best for a long time, for most people anyway. From 0.7 and on there are no more extended mode, and thats why ED wont work with it basicly.

What demos dont work for you?

Thanks guys, had a feeling it was something to do with the runtime versions. A bit frustrating though when you pay £300 for one and it's this complicated. I've tried alsorts of demos, affected, abandoned school, haunted rift, dinosaurs. I bought surgeon simulator off steam, went into properties and chose the vr rift beta as explained to do so, I enable the rift in the game settings but no image on my headset. I tried with alien isolation. The monitor screen comes up with 2 circles and on the alien screen at the beginning, the screen moves to the motion of the rift but theirs no image on the rift.

I've just tried installing the 0.5 beta but i get a message The oculus display driver is not supported for this configuration, and will not be installed.

Sorry for keeping reposting. It's a strange one with the Alien Isolation. When the Oculus service is running i try start Alien Isolation but nothing happens at all. I stop the Oculus Service (as it asks to enable rift mode with this game) and the game loads up but like i say above, theres no image on the rift but the screen moves when i move the rift. Confused

I can't recall exactly with that game but you could try setting your extended rift display as primary display. It will make launching the game more difficult as it will move your desktop icons to the rift. It was a hack which was needed with some earlier run times. It's part of the reason why things are much better since the extended mode was removed. You'll have much less hassle with runtime 0.8 and games which support it.

Quote from above "A bit frustrating though when you pay £300 for one and it's this complicated"

The DK2 is a development kit and as such, not likely to work with 'lots of other s/w and games etc' - straight out of the box without issues.

Unless there's been an update to Alien Isolation, it won't work out of the box. You need to do this hack. Even with that hack, the scale feels off. I had to stop playing, as 5 minutes running around in an FPS made me motion sick.

I'm currently using 0.5 SDK in Windows 10, as 0.6 SDK wouldn't work for me with Elite: Dangerous.

I'm having moderate success with 0.8 in the Horizons beta, but the 0.5 version still works better for me.

As i said bud, theres no option for extended mode on the 0.8.0 beta version. Aparantly they stopped the extended mode after 0.6 or summin, so i read. Tried the hack for Alien, but still to no avail. These are what my settings look like. Are they correct?
<Setting name="Stereo Mode">
<Quality name="Rift" precedence="4"/>
</Setting>
<Setting name="Depth of Field">
<Quality name="On" bool="1" precedence="2">

I was referring to 0.5. Never tried Alien isolation with 0.8. Five minutes in 0.5 was enough. It was poorly implemented.

Damn, I agree that the implementation wasn't the best but Alien Isolation remains one of my favorite VR experiences to date. That game in VR is real underwear changing stuff!

I tried 0.5 but half way through installation it said something like this version is not supported, it will not be installed. I really want to get Alien working. My Alien Isolation game isn't a steam game, I just bought it rather than downloading off steam, would that have any effect?

I'm just reading further up on it and it says: Next you'll need to set the Oculus to extended mode, and use the configuration utility to pause the service. Start the game, then reactivate the service by setting the display mode to "Direct to Rift".
I can't set the rift to extended mode and how do you reactivate the service by setting the display mode direct to rift?

You will need runtime 0.5 installed to be able to select 'extended mode', if the 0.5 installer errors when you run it and the installation does not complete then that will be the source of your problem. What version of Windows are you running? I hear lots of people have issues with runtime 0.5 and Windows 10.

I am running Windows 10. I managed to install 0.5 but had to run it in compatibility mode for Windows 8 (I read online someone else did this and it worked). Once installed my computer restarted then I hit loads of problems. I could set my rift to extended mode but could only see a certain part of my desktop in my rift, the sound completely stopped working, Internet stopped working, I started alien just to see if it worked but only came through the right eye. I couldn't press the start menu once I set my pc as the main display, couldn't search anything, I tried system restore but that was unavailable. Tried recovery, unavailable. I'm in the process of reinstalling windows but going back to Windows 7. Got a free upgrade to 10 but might see if it's any better on windows 7.

In extended mode your PC will only show half of your desktop in the Rift - this is normal, just make sure your monitor is the primary display so the 'Start' button shows on the correct display. The sound issue not so much but a reboot may have fixed that or re-installing your sound card drivers. Once you have the Rift working in extended mode under the 0.5 runtime you will need to make sure your desktop in the rift is orientated correctly, if it isn't the use the NVidia control panel to rotate the DK2 display so it is orientated correctly.

Once the above is sorted run the Oculus desk demo from the configuration utility. If that works then you should be good to go. Simply pause the oculus service via the Oculus configuration utility.

Now run Alien Isolation.

It sounds like, and no offense meant, that you are not that IT savvy, panicking and using restore points because of a hiccup isn't the best way to deal with things or getting them working. Judging from above it sounds like you were quite close to getting everything working. Remember, the DK2 is a developer unit, it's not meant for normal consumers, to get some things to work, particularly those with none official support, you'll have to do things that average Windows users would not normally do.

No offence taken mate, but believe it or not I am pretty half decent with computers, just not wih the Oculus lol. I've built my PC's from scratch and know quite a bit about them, but the Oculus just confused me big time. Once reinstalled windows, and reverted back to windows 7, I managed to install the 0.5 version and after playing about a little bit managed to get Alien working on the Rift. After 2 minutes of playing it, got dizzy and felt sick lol. So after all that, it didn't work out as i hoped but to be honest, was never keen on Windows 10 anyway and my computer needed a fresh install.

Your not the first to give up. AI have a very weird neckmodel, thats really crap for VR.

But I think we will see the game come back again with official support when we get consumer headsets.

Its a classic for sure.
