Can't Get Much Closer than THIS!

Takin' it down to the wire...

Duked it out with a Python in a HazRes. For a while I thought I was playing SkyRim getting blasted with fireballs by a ' Wizard. Massive flaming explosions engulfing my ship. Confusing as hell. Whittled him down to 11% and me at 44% when the enemy bailed - low waked out. And then I noticed that I was still dying. Heat damage was still occuring and damage level was going up quick. Heat sink slowed it down, then another. But the damage meter just kept going down. It occured to me that if I went into supercruise maybe that would put out the fires. I was down to 12% when I popped into SC and the thermal damage messages from b.itchin betty stopped. I had a a bit over 6 minutes of oxygen left.

But I was in the gravity well of a gas giant and it seemed like it was taking forever to get back to Carlisle Station in LidPar. I was down to 2:54 - I think - when I finally escaped that gas giant and headed for the barn - 686 LS away. Arrived with about a minute left and stupidly overshot the drop out point. By the time I got back to the station and dropped out of SC there was 24 secs left. Lined up with the slot and goosed the throttle while asking for permission to land. Hit the slot with 2 secs left and passed thru gasping for air (really - there were gasping for air sounds - wow!) and had 1 sec left and thought - this should be interesting - pilot dies within in seconds of sucor - news at 10. But I didn't. The choking and gagging stopped. The air left message froze at 1. Air inside the hangar??? Must be - who knew. Land at pad 11 - almost right below the slot. Over shot it and had to back in and lower down. Lucky - thrusters were down to about 15% I think. I guess the Guardian Angel of Bounty Hunters was on the job and payin' attention 'cuz I - shud'a - died right there!

I thought stations had air, hence the airlock entrances. But I also think I've heard of life support being used in station.

This makes me think it's better to have your canopy out if you're out of air in station. Good design.

I had my second canopy breach today, this time in Lidpar as well. Once you pass the slot, you enter the station's atmosphere and your Remlock suit deactivates. The time showing that remains is your time left if you don't make it successfully!

My first time was in Alpha Centauri doing a recovery mission. There I was jumped by some criminals and had to fight my way back to the nearest outpost with a busted canopy...I quickly went into Outfitting to buy time in its atmosphere only to discover that no repairs were being done :( I did get my time renewed, though. Needless to say the trip to the next starport was stressful...but I made it just by a hair's breadth (pun intended). The moral of the story is to get at least a "D" rated life support as 7:30 is better than 5 minutes!

Good you made it back to fight another day!

I had the same (almost, not quite as close) experience when I first bought a Vulture. Before that I had always assumed that the docks were airless.

Next time you're at an outpost, notice how there's a blue airlock line around the perimeter of the pads which doesn't exist in large stations.

Magnificent! That's what I love about the unforgiving nature of the game - when you only just make it like this it really is a cause for celebration and somehow it actually makes you feel as if it were real. Amazing story! Well done for surviving.
