Cant get to Barnards Loop any suggestions appreciated.

Hi All

I decided I would set myself a little challenge and try to visit all the Asteroid Bases that are currently listed on EDDB.

I was merrily going on my way and have so far managed about 23 of the 46 but there is one in Barnards loop that Im trying to get to and the route planner gets to about 85% and then just tells me unable to plan route.

I am in a totally standard Diamondback Explorer and it has a jump range of about 39.8ly its currently situated in Maia but have tried to plot routes from various different locations around the bubble all with no joy.

The total jump distance has been depending on where I am 900-1500ly and should be able as I understand to plot a route up to 10000ly so that cant be the problem. I am using only KGBFOAM stars have tried fastest/economical routes also.

I have posted on other forums and they have told me Barnards Loop is doable with the jump range I have.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks in Advance :)

Maybe taking off the KGBFOAM will open up options and take off the economical route. Hope it helps out as I am visiting there in the next week after I have been to Sag A

Sometimes it's also a matter of the plotting distance. It happens often to me. At first I cannot plot the route to a star 2-3 kylies from my location. But when I do like a half of the distance, the plotting works like a charm.

The reason it is difficult to reach is because there is a large area of permit-locked space between it and the bubble. I recently had a Fuel Rats rescue in that area and managed to get there, I think because I was using Neutron stars and with my jump range boosted to just over 200 LYs I managed to bypass the area. However, getting back was a different story. With no neutrons in the immediate area I tried plotting a normal route and was having the same problem as you. I mentioned my dilemma on the Fuel Rats IRC and was told I would need to travel east or west a fair distance first to get around the prohibited area. I think I eventually made it back via the Pleiades area, so possibly going to the Pleiades first in your case might help. Good Luck. :)

Thanks for that info FLossy ... I will try circumnavigating the area and see if I can get in another way :)

You're welcome. I only really found out about it by accident so if it helps you, great! :)

It's relatively easy to do actually. You just need to understand that the route plotter will only diverge from the direct path to the next system by around 20%, so if it reaches the permit locked areas it won't attempt to route around it will just fail. Set your route to just before the permit locked area then go straight down around 200ly or so, that will allow you to plot past the locked areas then back up to the asteroid base, Witch Head I think is the one you are referring to?

No been to Witch Head Science Centre .... After this one https://eddb.io/station/66277

Thanks for the heads up on how the route planning works. Will bear that in mind :)

A good way to get past Witch Head Nebula to Orion is to first plot to Rigel and from there to the Orion Nebula Tourist Center. I don't know the minimum jump range requirement, but I know 30+ is enough.

It's a bit of a maze because of the locked systems, but I was able to get out there (although not all the way, but very close) by going through the witch head nebula and going along the perimeter until I found a path through. I didn't chart my journey and it was over a year ago, but either way get ready to spend a lot of time.

It’s within Col 70 which is basically a 1,000 ly diamater sphere which is permit locked, but with unlocked regions within. AFAIK, there’s 3 ways in & 2 out.

From Maia, you’re route in is via Synuefe into Witchhead sector. The wall of Col 70 systems between the two is only about 20 ly thick on the line from the bubble to the Witchhead Nebula so you should be able to jump the wall without any problems. Your best bet is to try to plot a route to the Witchhead Science Centre (HIP 23759) which you’ll probably be able to do directly from Maia. If not, first head to somewhere in Synuefe, along the line from the Witchhead to the bubble.

From the Witchhead, you’ll be able to plot a route direct to the Orion Nebula Tourist Centre.

Happy flying, cmdr! o7

Check out the thread for the recent Outer Rim Station Tour expedition; there’s a link there with a discussion on this very topic.

I think even getting on close to 15 LY would probably work, but I've only tested on 22.26+ since the update that introduced the permit locked systems.

OP or others, try plotting a route to HIP 22588 (toward the core in front of Witch Head) and then straight in to the Loop from there.

Also, there's a way in near the top of the Loop at around Trapezium Sector DM-U C3-6.

Yep, we went through that! I noted down the systems I plotted through in a textfile, but I'm at work so I can't post it now.

Thanks for the informative posts everyone ..

Managed to get through it went down past it then back in from the other side. Managed to pick my way through the permit locked areas which was obviously what wasnt helping the route planner.

From Barnards Loop I headed up to Thors Helmet Sector and now sitting in Hell Port in Seagull Sector.

From Hell Port I'm heading up to Rosette Sector

Think I have about 16/17 still to do of the 46. When I started this little expedition I was Explorer rank of Scout and now I'm only 7% off of Ranger, I'm hoping that by the time I reach the Asteroid Bases in Colonia area and return to the bubble I will be getting close to Elite explorer rank. On the way I've come across some undiscovered areas and claimed them which is cool but still to find my 1st Earth Like planet.

But don't think getting Elite is that easy, the last step is kinda huge. I think you need 400 million in total payouts to reach it, you can read about that in the hall of fame thread.

Oh yes I've seen the figures that are required.
