Newcomer / Intro Can't pick up minerals with cargo scoop! PLease help!!!

Hey All,

So I'm at a roid and I am knocking chunks off but I go to pick them up and I can't. Im going very slow and its in my scoop window but for some reason my scoop won't pick it up. O and my refinery is empty.

You also need a refinery installed to refine the bits you want to keep. Those gallite 24% is 24 % of a tonne, so youo need to make a whoel tonne before it turns into cargo.

I have a refinery, I was able to pick up one piece. But ever since that I have not been able to pick anything else up. I even gt rid of the bit I had picked up, but still nothing. The ore just bounces off my ship, I even made sure I'm only going a speed of 5.

not sure, you haven't taken your ship over its power limit have you ? your power plant needs to generate enough power to power all your upgrades, so maybe the refinery isn't working for that reason ?

the process is use mining laser to knock off bits of asteroid, select them using the targeting thing, fly toward them slowly while watching the little radar to line them up, once scooped you need to switch to the right panel and in cargo select the thing you want to keep and it will start to refine it, or dump whats in the refinery.

Your cargo scoop should show Resources unallocated if the refinery is full because you haven't cleared the thing by refining or dumping

OK I believe I figured it out. With the sidewinder scooping cargo is straight forward. I now have the Adder and it seems that you have to hit the cargo just right or it bounces off the front of your ship. It seems the scoop is positioned on the bottom of the ship and you have to make sure the cargo goes under your ship or it bounces off your ship. I feel kind of silly know! Thanks for your help all!

Ok Just in case, here are the basics. Maybe there is a step you are missing:
You have a mining laser and a Refinery fitted.
Move close to an Asteroid, put some pips to weapons and use mining laser to blast off one or more fragment of Ore
Target a frag to see the contents and the percentages (there are usually 2 components, sometimes only one). If you want to pick it up:
  1. Lower your cargo scoop
  2. Align the targeted frag so it appears in you cargo scoop scanner
  3. Slowly approach. The Scoop is always on the bottom of the ship. Well below the pilot.
(if the scanner starts beeping, you are going too fast)
  4. Once the frag has been caught and you have not yet allocated the ore to a slot in the refinery, it will sit in the refinery Hopper awaiting allocation. (You cannot scoop another frag until you allocate it to a refinery slot)
  5. Switch you view to the right panel and select the Cargo Tab. Now in the refinery hopper it will show the ore you collected and you have to select it to allocate it to an Empty slot in your refinery. If there are two types of ore Bother have to be allocated, or if you have no empty slots, press the little arrow next to the ore you DONT want and it will be purged.
  6. Target the next frag and scoop it up. If it has the same ore you have already allocated to a slot, that or will now be processed automatically.
  7. Once the slot in the refinery reaches 100% you will get one tone of that ore transferred to your cargo Bay Woohoo. You will then need to allocate ore to that empty slot again.

One other thing is that ore fragment decompose a while after being blasted off a roid. When you target a frag, the % indicator on the bottom of the target panel to the left of the scanner shows how long before it gets to 0 and then disappears. At first you may only be able to blast of a couple of frags before picking them up. Once you get better at it, you can blast off all 10 from the roid and still have plenty of time to scoop them all up (targeting them one at a time and picking them up one at a time).

If you have a big RESOURCES UNALLOCATED message on your cargo scanner window, it means you have unallocated ore in your refinery hopper. Switch to the Right Panel cargo tab and allocate the ore to empty slots. If there are no empty slots you need to purge the hopper or purge one of the hoppers to free it up.
A refinery for one slot is OK for a beginner but it means every time you pickup a frag that contains 2 different elements, you will have to switch to the refinery hoper in the right window and eject the material you don't want.
4 or 5 slots is Ideal, but depending on your cash it will take a little while to get one of those, so you have to micro manger your refinery more.

If you have any other questions please ask. I love mining <insert crazy old timer miner laugh here>.

Yep. im in my sidewinder and i approach at maximum safe speed (blue outer box) position the cargo image just below the crosshair zero and then go get a drink. The cargo item will rise up vertical in your viewfinder as you approach. Ignore prox/impact warnings in sidewinder, other ships may require a less coarse method of capture. If you're going too fast the outer box will be red instead of blue and you will impact with the cargo no matter how well you have it aligned.

Yeah Adder "cargo scoop hitbox" is pretty bad... I had hard times too getting used to it... it was much easyer with the hauler...
To which point I can't even be sure of I would not go back to hauler for mining if I had to choose as I was loosing quite a lot of time scooping in the Adder... but ofc the hauler has a pretty bad cargo space compered to Adder...

Still have fun mining, I liked it but I can't stand it for more than 2-3 full cargo loads ;)

Fly safe out there

ignore the top half of the viewfinder. centre the target in the bottom half of the viewfinder.

This, with the adder you have to scoop things with the bottom half of the viewer, even out of the square will work, it's severely misaligned upwards.
