Horizons Can't play anymore

You can start the launcher direct, bypassing Steam - just to give you something else to try really. Either search for EDLaunch.exe or navigate to your steam library / steamapps / common / Elite Dangerous directory and launch EDLaunch.exe from there.

We had issues recently with the Launcher being unresponsive but they seemed to have fixed that (server-side bug). There is a potential fix for network issues that F D gave us some 16 months ago, to do with MTU changes. It doesn't sound like your problem but again, you can give it a go if you like: https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=265

Game saves are held on Frontier's servers so no worries there mate if your PC ever busts a plug.

(Sorry for the poor attempt at Aussie, it's late and I should really have gone to bed. )

Tried to launch as you suggested, but got a message: Failed to Logon - Use the launcher (or something like that. Can't remember the exact words)

I have some instructions from Support as to your suggestions. Taking a bit of time to get my head around it all.
I really appreciate everybody trying to help.

edit: Support said to close ipv6 (done) and lower MTU to 1450 (done.
Results before change: ping google at 1500 mtu 4 pkts sent 1 returned.
Results after change: 1450 MTU 4 sent 0 returned.

edit:
Followed Support's instructions and been playing for an hour and half.
Hope this is a permanent fix.
Thanks guys.

Hi Guys, Australia Melbourne here, I have a question regarding installation, does the game have to be installed into the main drive ( C ) , or can I install it into a SSD , which in my case is Drive D,

Cheers

Any drive will be fine. My steam installation is actually on a HDD and I see no performance issues, startup might be marginally slower than my main account on a SSD but only by a gnat's.

MTU settings. Yeah. If there's an MTU misconfiguration, that's going to stop you playing, or doing much at all. Are you using the router supplied by your ISP?

Hopefully you won't need it but if you ever want to run without going through Steam, directly starting the launcher (EDLaunch.exe) should work with no problems, it does for me. I put a shortcut to the launcher on my desktop and here is a screenie showing the shortcut's properties tab:

So it is a direct link, the only difference you see with the launcher is that the steam logo is no longer shown in the bottom right.

It sounds as though you tried to launch the client directly (EliteDangerous64.exe), this is what you get when you try that:

I hope your troubles have ended.

Actually, my son has the ISP account. I share, connected to his router/modem or whatever it is. I have had a slowness in the past when my wife and daughter were on Netflix. No, the NBN system in Australia is not the best and fastest by any means.
It was getting rid of IPV6 and dropping the MTU from 1500 to 1450 that worked.

Thanks MalcYorks, I will copy that to a text and keep it . If ever ..... And the way I launch is the blue button on the launcher.

To explain what happened after the fix, I was in my ASPx and headed about 250 LY to Hyades Sector and Dav's hope. I did a few missions on the way and even trashed one of those dropship types.
I landed on the planet and found the mining area. Ran around and busted about 4 rocks. No good for me. Then I had a crash "Cannot connect to Transaction Server"
Loaded again and scanned the abandoned mine base.
I think I did good as one crash was no big deal. I just hope there are no more at all, but the occasional one was what I put up with all the time in the past.

Just to add, this complete unable to play problem seemed to coincide with the crew or whatever it was that FD gave out recently.

I hope it will play out well. It's bad enough that you guys are kind of left out of the community by playing hours. I can't imagine what would I do if I couldn't play Elite at all!

Thanks Chris. I played Solitaire. Played Borderland 1. Got motion sick. Gave that up and got through a couple of Amazon ebooks.
I could not bring myself to go back to Witcher 3 even though it is a great game. No GUUUUNNNSSS ..................
